How Neighbours Communicate: The Role of Language in Border Relations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper reports on a study of the linguistic situation in the border region where Norway meets Russia in the north. The aim of the study was to investigate language use when contact is revitalised after a long period with closed borders. The Norwegian

LL‐37 Driven Phase Transition and Stacking in Oligolamellar Gram‐Negative Bacterial Membrane Models

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work establishes oligolamellar bacterial membrane models to investigate how LL‐37 disrupts the complex dual‐bilayer architecture of Gram‐negative bacteria. Combining SAXS, cryo‐TEM, electrophoretic mobility measurements, and coarse‐grained simulations, it reveals cardiolipin‐driven phase transitions leading to bicelle‐like structures and membrane ...

Associations between health-related quality of life, physical function and fear of falling in older fallers receiving home care [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Falls and injuries in older adults have significant consequences and costs, both personal and to society. Although having a high incidence of falls, high prevalence of fear of falling and a lower quality of life, older adults receiving home care are ...

Oxygen Supply of Islets of Langerhans by Photosynthetically Active Microalgae in Bioprinted Co‐Cultures Maintains Their Function in a Hypoxic Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study developed a bioprinted co‐culture system embedding rat pancreatic islets and Scenedesmus sp. microalgae spatially defined in close vicinity. Red light was found optimal to ensure microalgal photosynthesis while maintaining islet viability and functionality. A tailored co‐culture medium supported both cell types.

3D Soft Hydrogels Induce Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells “Deep” Quiescence

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Three‐dimensional soft hydrogels mimicking the bone marrow niche induce deep quiescence in human mesenchymal stem cells. Unlike 2D culture, 3D matrices halt proliferation, regulate cell‐cycle and quiescence markers, and downregulate mTORC1 signaling, preserving stem cell phenotype and therapeutic potential ex vivo.

Exploring the Effects of Early Extramural English Exposure on the Vocabulary Size of University Students

open access: yesEducation Sciences
Research has shown that current informal extramural (out-of-class) activities can be an important predictor of second language (L2) vocabulary knowledge, but less is known about the relationship between language proficiency and activities earlier in life,

Anomalous Spin‐Optical Helical Effect in Ti‐Based Kagome Metal

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The kagome lattice hosts diverse correlated quantum states, including elusive loop currents. We report spin‐handedness selective signals in CsTi3Bi5, termed the anomalous spin‐optical helical effect, surpassing conventional spin responses. Arising from light helicity coupled to spin‐orbital correlations, this effect provides a sensitive, indirect probe
