As duas espécies do fungo microsporídio, Nosema ceranae e Nosema apis, são os agentes causadores da Nosemose. Esta doença é considerada uma das mais importantes na abelha Apis mellifera. Originalmente, a espécie responsável pela Nosemose na Europa era a N. apis, sendo a N. ceranae apenas encontrada na abelha asiática (Apis cerana).
