Radio, Memory, and the Past in the Nostalgia Film

Abstract Several prominent New Hollywood filmmakers experimented with limiting their soundtracks to ostensibly diegetic source music. In particular, two films associated with a trend of fifties nostalgia use the compiled pop scoring and the medium of radio to articulate complex sensibilities of the past.

Nostalgia for utopia in the films of Theo Angelopoulos

In this article, I examine the notion of nostalgia in relation to the films of Theo Angelopoulos. I argue that the image of nostalgia that pervades his films does not call for the restoration of the past but rather lends itself to a sense of hope which I approach as an image of utopia.
