Consumption of fa cai Nostoc soup: A Potential for BMAA exposure from Nostoc cyanobacteria in China?

open access: yesAmyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Other Motor Neuron Disorders, 2009
Grown in arid regions of western China the cyanobacterium Nostoc flagelliforme--called fa cai in Mandarin and fat choy in Cantonese--is wild-harvested and used to make soup consumed during New Year's celebrations.

Antioxidative responses of Nostoc ellipsosporum and Nostoc piscinale to salt stress

Journal of Applied Phycology, 2018
The responses of the cyanobacteria Nostoc ellipsosporum and Nostoc piscinale to salt stress during various growth stages were studied. Nostoc ellipsosporum was more NaCl tolerant and attained more biomass under salinity than N. piscinale. Accumulation of proline was detected in N. ellipsosporum under salinity stress.

Necessity of Boron for Nostoc muscorum

Nature, 1952
THERE are very few reports on the necessity of boron for the growth of lower plants. Koffler et al.1 found that borax increased the penicillin yields of submerged corn-steep cultures of Penicillium as well as cultures of Penicillium in synthetic medium. No definite requirement by algae for boron has yet been shown2.

Cellular differentiation in the cyanobacterium Nostoc punctiforme

Archives of Microbiology, 2002
Nostoc punctiforme is a phenotypically complex, filamentous, nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium, whose vegetative cells can mature in four developmental directions. The particular developmental direction is determined by environmental signals. The vegetative cell cycle is maintained when nutrients are sufficient.
