Unusual reversible elastomeric gels from Nostoc commune

International Journal of Biological Macromolecules, 2017
Nostoc commune cyanobacteria grow in extreme conditions of desiccation and nutrient-poor soils. Their colonies form spherical gelatinous bodies are composed of a variety of polysaccharides that allow them to store water and nutrients. In this paper, we study this type of biological gel that shows characteristics of both chemical and physical gels.

Scale-up of Nostoc commune Production

2001 Sacramento, CA July 29-August 1,2001, 2001
The new bioreactor, identified as a “flat-bed” reactor, provides an environment for the large-scale production of cyanobacteria under a controlled environment. The organism was observed to form colonies similar to those found in field material, and can be induced to form UV-protective pigments when exposed to UV-light.

Cultivation of Nostoc commune utilizing periodical desiccation-rehydration

2023

In vitro translation of mRNA from Nostoc commune (Cyanobacteria)

Archives of Microbiology, 1988
RNA pools were extracted from cells of Nostoc commune UTEX 584 in exponential growth (liquid cultures) and from cells which had been immobilized and dried rapidly at -99.5 MPa. Levels of incorporation of 35S-methionine, five- to sixfold higher than the endogenous level, were obtained after in vitro translation of the RNA preparations in a heterologous ...

Structural characterisation of a complex heteroglycan from the cyanobacterium Nostoc commune

Carbohydrate Polymers, 2013
An alkali-extractable O-methylated ribofuranose-containing heteroglycan, Nc-5-s, was isolated from wild-growing field colonies of the cyanobacterium Nostoc commune collected in Iceland, using ethanol fractionation and anion-exchange chromatography. The average molecular weight was estimated to be 1500 kDa.

Preparation of polysaccharides from cyanobacteria Nostoc commune and their antioxidant activities

Carbohydrate Polymers, 2014
In this study, water soluble polysaccharides were prepared from cyanobacteria Nostoc commune by water extraction. Factors affecting the polysaccharide yields were investigated, and the optimum extraction conditions were determined as follows: time, 4h; temperature, 90 °C; the ratio of liquid to solid, 60:1 (v/w); and extraction times, 4.

Sensitivity of Nostoc commune UTEX 584 (Cyanobacteria) to water stress

Archives of Microbiology, 1985
Cells of Nostoc commune UTEX 584 from liquid cultures expressed an upshift in nitrogenase activity when immobilised on inert supports and exposed to matric water potentials between -1.10 and -99.5 MPa. Cells incubated at 0.10 MPa (aw=c 1.0) maintained increased activity for at least 48 h following immobilization. At water potentials below -23.1 MPa (aw=
