CARS microscopy of scytonemin in cyanobacteria Nostoc commune
Journal of Raman Spectroscopy, 2018AbstractThis paper deals with the study of scytonemin in cyanobacteria applying coherent anti‐Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy. The chemically specific CARS response from particular chemical compounds in the algae cell is usually weak because of their low concentration and is often overwhelmed by optical emissions from other cellular ...

Summary The cyanobacterial genus Nostoc includes several species forming large spherical or sheet‐like gelatinous colonies of ecological importance in freshwater and semi‐terrestrial habitats. We tested differences in morphology, growth and metabolism across a range of temperatures (6–43 °C) of three colonial species of Nostoc collected and grown in ...

Nostoc commune Vaucher ex Bornet & Flahault 1888
2018Nostoc commune Vaucher ex Bornet & Flahault (1888: 203) Fig. 48 A–D. Colonies macroscopic, gelatinous, irregularly spherical when immature, later irregularly flattened or wavy, up to 15 cm in diameter, olive-green to yellow-green or brown in colour with firm periderm. Filaments flexuous, densely entangled, sheaths yellow-brown, sometimes lamellated.

Rehydration induces rapid onset of lipid biosynthesis in desiccated Nostoc commune (Cyanobacteria)
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Lipids and Lipid Metabolism, 1993Water, which contained [1,3-3H]glycerol, [35S]sodium sulfate, or [32P]sodium orthophosphate, was used to rehydrate air-dried cells of the desiccation-tolerant filamentous cyanobacterium Nostoc commune. The cells retained their capacities for the uptake and transport of all three compounds and, in response to rewetting, they mobilized the radiolabels ...

Structural analysis of a monomeric hemoglobin from the cyanobacterium Nostoc commune strain UTEX 584, cyanoglobin (Potts et al. (1992) Science 256, 1690-1692), is presented. Cyanoglobin binds molecular oxygen reversibly, with high oxygen affinity and non-cooperativity.

Fine Structure of Leptogium cyanescens and Its Cultured Phycobiont Nostoc commune
The Bryologist, 1977The ultrastructure of Leptogium cyanescens Ach. K6rb. and its cultured phycobiont, Nostoc commune Vauch., were examined using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the isidia break at the point of contact with the thallus, suggesting a possible dehiscence mechanism.

Nostoc commune Vaucher, a terrestrial and benthic blue-green alga, widely used in food and medicine worldwide. N. commune Polysaccharides (NCVP) have excellent biological activities, especially immunomodulatory, hypoglycemic and anti-tumor activities. However, the mechanism and structure-activity relationship of NCVP has been less studied.

On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene fragment studied the genetic diversity of populations of Nostoc commune, growing in the mountains and plains (tundra, taiga and steppe) conditions. Despite the high genetic similarity of populations studied, highlighted groups uniting Nostoc populations from different geographic areas.
