The two‐component response regulator OrrA confers dehydration tolerance by regulating avaKa expression in the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 24, Issue 11, Page 5165-5173, November 2022., 2022
Abstract The cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120 exhibits dehydration tolerance. The regulation of gene expression in response to dehydration is crucial for the acquisition of dehydration tolerance, but the molecular mechanisms underlying dehydration responses remain unknown.

Inferred ancestry of scytonemin biosynthesis proteins in cyanobacteria indicates a response to Paleoproterozoic oxygenation

open access: yesGeobiology, Volume 20, Issue 6, Page 764-775, November 2022., 2022
Abstract Protection from radiation damage is an important adaptation for phototrophic microbes. Living in surface, shallow water, and peritidal environments, cyanobacteria are especially exposed to long‐wavelength ultraviolet (UVA) radiation. Several groups of cyanobacteria within these environments are protected from UVA damage by the production of ...

Control of algal growth on greenhouse surfaces using commercial algaecides

open access: yesScientia Agricola, 2020
Greenhouses and nurseries provide ideal environments for facilitating the formation of nuisance algal mats. Algal growth poses safety concerns to horticulturists and stimulates the propagation of unwanted plant pests and pathogens.

What is a biocrust? A refined, contemporary definition for a broadening research community

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 97, Issue 5, Page 1768-1785, October 2022., 2022
ABSTRACT Studies of biological soil crusts (biocrusts) have proliferated over the last few decades. The biocrust literature has broadened, with more studies assessing and describing the function of a variety of biocrust communities in a broad range of biomes and habitats and across a large spectrum of disciplines, and also by the incorporation of ...

Nostoc commune-derived scytonemin induced mitochondrial cell death in leukemia models. [PDF]

open access: yesMed Oncol
Abstract Cyanobacteria have long attracted scientific interest through their potential application in the development of new therapeutic approaches, particularly those related to the treatment of cancer. In this study, the antiproliferative effects of Nostoc commune extract (NOS) and the cyanobacterial compound scytonemin (SCY) were evaluated

Structure and enzymatic degradation of the polysaccharide secreted by Nostoc commune

open access: yesCarbohydrate Research, 2022
Noctoc commune is a cyanobacterium living in various and extreme environments. Its ability to survive in desert, on ice or high altitude is explained by its exceptional metabolism and its capacity to resist to desiccation. N. commune cells are embedded in a gelatinous matrix made of polysaccharides which fixes water and participates in maintaining the ...

Polyphasic evaluation of key cyanobacteria in biocrusts from the most arid region in Europe [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2019
Cyanobacteria are key microbes in topsoil communities that have important roles in preventing soil erosion, carbon and nitrogen fixation, and influencing soil hydrology.

Ultrastructure and development of “coccoid cells” ofNostoc commune (Cyanophyta) [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Phycological Journal, 1989
Development of new colonies by means of single, undifferentiated cells (“coccoid cells”) was observed in Nostoc commune (Cyanophyta). Investigation of these cells under the electron microscope has not revealed any of the structural changes that accompany akinete differentiation. These cells are therefore considered vegetative cells.
