The phytoplankton of an enriched, soft-water lakel subject to intermittent hydraulic flushing (Grasmere, English Lake District) [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
This paper describes some characteristic features of the phytoplankton of Grasmere, one of the smaller of the principal lakes of the English Lake District, and attempts to relate these to distinctive physical and chemical properties of the lake ...

The Biology, Microclimate, and Geology of a Distinctive Ecosystem Within the Sandstone of Hyper‐Arid Timna Valley, Israel

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 5, October 2025.
This study describes an endolithic microbial community primarily composed of the cyanobacterial taxon Chroococcidiopsis, along with comprehensive data regarding the local geological and microclimatic factors that affect this distinct ecosystem. Metagenomic analysis identified genes associated with adaptive mechanisms for extreme aridity, with sporadic ...

Scytonematopsis contorta sp. nov. (Nostocales), a new species from the Hawaiian Islands. [PDF]

open access: yesFottea, 2011
Scytonematopsis Kiseleva is a poorly known cyanobacterial genus with a widespread, mostly tropical distribution. A new species, S. contorta, is described from the Hawaiian Island of Oahu based on morphological and molecular evidence. The new species was found growing on rock in damp aerial habitats proximal to streams and waterfalls.

The Desert in Bottles: The Culturable Microbiome of the Atacama Desert's Grit Crust

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 5, October 2025.
The grit crust represents a unique biocrust type of the coastal Atacama Desert. Cyanobacteria, green algae and free‐living fungi were isolated along a fog gradient. Phylogenetic relationships indicated novel taxa and framed an indigenous microbiome. Microclimate and soil data support functional groups related to sites.

Historical colonization patterns of Dolichospermum lemmermannii (Cyanobacteria) in a deep lake south of the Alps

open access: yesAdvances in Oceanography and Limnology, 2015
Since the beginning of the 1990s, Lake Garda showed the appearance of extended surface water blooms of Dolichospermum lemmermannii (Nostocales, Cyanobacteria).

Biodiversity in mountain soils above the treeline

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 5, Page 1877-1949, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Biological diversity in mountain ecosystems has been increasingly studied over the last decade. This is also the case for mountain soils, but no study to date has provided an overall synthesis of the current state of knowledge. Here we fill this gap with a first global analysis of published research on cryptogams, microorganisms, and fauna in ...
