Kalymmatonema gen. nov. (Scytonemataceae, Cyanobacteria): A desert soil crust genus previously identified as Scytonema hyalinum, with description of seven species new to science

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, Volume 61, Issue 5, Page 1225-1250, October 2025.
Abstract Numerous cyanobacterial strains previously identified as Scytonema hyalinum were determined to be phylogenetically distant from the type species of Scytonema, S. hofmannii. Morphological and molecular evidence suggests this distinct clade necessitates placement in a new genus, and we have described Kalymmatonema gen. nov. herein. Kalymmatonema

Phylogenetic and morphological evaluation of the genera Anabaena, Aphanizomenon, Trichormus and Nostoc (Nostocales, Cyanobacteria) [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 2005
The heterocytous cyanobacteria form a monophyletic group according to 16S rRNA gene sequence data. Within this group, phylogenetic and morphological studies have shown that genera such as Anabaena and Aphanizomenon are intermixed. Moreover, the phylogeny of the genus Trichormus, which was recently separated from Anabaena, has not been investigated. The

Controls on microalgal community structures in cryoconite holes upon high Arctic glaciers, Svalbard [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Glaciers are known to harbor surprisingly complex ecosystems. On their surface, distinct cylindrical holes filled with meltwater and sediments are considered as hot spots for microbial life.

Cyanoprokaryota в обростаннях молюсків роду Planorbarius (Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Planorbidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
В сучасних дослідженнях біологічного різноманіття значна частина робіт присвячується вивченню альгофлори різного типу водойм та водотоків. При проведенні експериментальних робіт такого роду практично не звертається увага на альгоепібіонтів зоологічних ...

Cyanobacterial diversity in Salar de Huasco, a high altitude saline wetland in Northern Chile, are highly similar to Antarctic cyanobacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The diversity of Cyanobacteria in water and sediment samples from four representative sites of the Salar de Huasco was examined using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and analysis of clone libraries of 16S rRNA gene PCR products.

Positional 13C enrichment analysis of aspartate determines PEPC activity in vivo

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 1, Page 401-414, October 2025.
Summary Photoautotrophic organisms fix inorganic carbon (Ci) by RIBULOSE‐1,5‐BISPHOSPHATE CARBOXYLASE/OXYGENASE (RUBISCO) and PHOSPHOENOLPYRUVATE CARBOXYLASE (PEPC). Monitoring Ci assimilation rates in vivo is a major challenge in analyzing photoautotrophic metabolism and engineering improved photosynthesis, as conventional methods do not distinguish ...

Cyanomargarita gen. nov. (Nostocales, Cyanobacteria): convergent evolution resulting in a cryptic genus

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, 2017
Two populations of Rivularia‐like cyanobacteria were isolated from ecologically distinct and biogeographically distant sites. One population was from an unpolluted stream in the Kola Peninsula of Russia, whereas the other was from a wet wall in the Grand Staircase‐Escalante National Monument, a desert park‐land in Utah.
