Establishing an Apheresis Medicine Program in a Resource‐Constrained Setting: A 5‐Year Experience From Lagos, Nigeria

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Establishing a comprehensive apheresis medicine program in a resource‐constrained setting presents significant structural, financial, and logistical challenges. Despite the growing clinical importance of apheresis services globally, published experience from sub‐Saharan Africa remains sparse.

Serum Myonectin Levels Are Positively Associated With Physical Function and Lower Frailty‐Related Limitation in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients: A Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients frequently suffer from frailty, characterized by reduced physical function and poor prognosis. Myokines, such as myonectin, secreted by muscle, are emerging regulators of systemic health. This study investigated the relationship between serum myonectin, adipokines (adiponectin, omentin), and ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Considerations on the Experience of Learning and Performing Plainchant Among Non-Professional Choral Singers in a Contemporary Irish Context

open access: yesReligions
Plainchant has formed a core sacred vocal repertory for Western Christianity for over a millennium, and following a surge of interest in chant as an early music repertory over the twentieth century and beyond, it has accrued particular significance for ...

Vectorcardiographic Notation [PDF]

open access: yesCirculation, 1956
The method of viewing the frontal, sagittal and transverse vectorcardiographic planes is considered from the standpoint of devising a uniform system of measuring angles on these planes. It is pointed out that care must be taken in the selection of oscilloscopic presentations to prevent inconsistency of the signs of the trigonometric functions of such ...
