Grain size effects on notch sensitivity

International Journal of Fatigue, 2015
Abstract This work presents experimental results on the fatigue behavior of cracks growing from circular notches under axial loading conditions for a very wide range of notch size to grain size ratios, including cases where the notch size is of the order of, or even smaller, than the grain size.

Notch effect and brittle-ductile transition

Materials Science, 1998
We present the fresults of the investigation of the effect of notches on the brittle-ductile transition in the process of fracture of structural materials. It is shown that the local elastoplastic state of a material in the vicinity of the notch can be described by using the corresponding stress intensity factorsK I σ , strain intensity factorsK i e ...

Effect of notch dimension on the fatigue life of V-notched structure

Nuclear Engineering and Design, 2011
Abstract The stress singularity degree associated to a V-notch has a great influence on the fatigue life of V-notched structure. The growth rate of the crack initiated at the tip of a V-notch depends on the stress singularity of the V-notch. The fatigue life accompanying with this small crack will represent a large amount of the total fatigue life ...

Factors influencing temporal effects with notched-noise maskers

Hearing Research, 1992
Temporal effects in simulataneous masking were studied by measuring the reduction in the amount of masking produced by a gated masker when that masker was preceded by a 400-ms noise (the precursor) that was usually spectrally identical to the masker. The signal frequency (fs) was 1.0 or 4.0 kHz.

Effects of cracks and notches: collapse

1989
In Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM; Chapter 3) as well as in Elastic-Plastic Fracture Mechanics (EPFM; Chapter 4) the analysis of fracture is based on a parameter representing the crack tip stress field; while the quantity used in EPFM is actually the strain energy release rate, this can be shown to be equivalent to a stress field parameter. In

Notch flexure hinges: An effective theory

Review of Scientific Instruments, 2002
This article presents effective tractable equations for rotational compliance (stiffness) of a simple monolithic flexure hinge with circular (radius R and crosspiece thickness t), elliptical [at semiaxis ax, ay, elliptical ratio ε (=ax/ay)] and other cross sections.

Effect of notch on ductile fracture

International Journal of Fracture Mechanics, 1971
The present work is an attempt towards a proper understanding of the fracture mechanics of ductile materials. Experiments were carried out to find the notch ductility of four materials: stainless steel, brass, copper, (all annealed) and mild steel (normalized). The crack propagation takes place when the strain just ahead of the crack reaches a critical

Notch Effect in High Cycle Fatigue

2001
This paper presents a different approach for the estimation of fatigue life duration of notched shafts. The traditional approach, which is based on the notch radius and the stress concentration factor, is not applicable for all stress concentration geometries, for example shafts with key-seats.

Notch Effects, Stress State, and Ductility

Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 1978
A review of the literature on testing of notched specimens is provided with emphasis on short-term notched bar tension tests. The effects of notch geometry, stress state, and smooth-bar tensile properties on notched ductility, notch sensitivity, and mode of fracture are discussed.
