A generalised notch stress intensity factor for U-notched components loaded under mixed mode
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2008Abstract A novel notch stress intensity factor (NSIF) for U-notched specimens loaded under mixed mode is examined in this article. The concept is based on the averaged strain energy density criterion, or alternatively on the cohesive zone model, as well as the equivalent local mode approach.

Notch stress intensity factors and fatigue strength of aluminium and steel welded joints
International Journal of Fatigue, 2001According to a recent and appropriate definition, stress field parameters, namely notch stress intensity factors (N-SIFs), can be used to predict the fatigue behaviour of mechanical components weakened by V-shaped re-entrant corners, where the singularity in the stress distribution makes any failure criterion based on elastic peak stress no longer ...

Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, 2012
Abstract Notch stress intensity factors (NSIFs) of a number of flat plates with periodic sharp V-notches under a remote applied normal stress are calculated. The main objective of this study is to take advantage of the local strain energy density (SED) averaged on a control volume surrounding the tip of the middle notch and estimate the NSIF of each ...

A NOTCH INTENSITY FACTOR APPROACH TO THE STRESS ANALYSIS OF WELDS
Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 1998In the context of linear elastic stress gradients that are present in welded joints, a stress field approach based on notch stress intensity factors is presented with the aim of describing stress distributions in the neighbourhood of weld toes, since fatigue strength is dependent on such distributions.

Stress and Stress Intensity Factor Near Notches in Thick Cylinders
Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, 2012This work investigates the impact of semi-elliptical notches (erosion grooves) at the bore of pressurized and autofrettaged thick cylinders. It provides a robust yet rapid method to determine the rapidly varying stress in the near-notch region prior to crack development and crack tip stress intensity factor after a crack develops at the notch root. The

Stress Concentration Factor and Stress Intensity Factor with U-notch and Crack in the Beam
Transactions of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers A, 2016Abstract : The stress concentration factors and stress intensity factors for a simple beam and a cantilever are analyzed by using finite element method and phtoelasticity. Using the analyzed results, the estimated graphs on stress concentration factors and stress intensity factors are obtained.

Improved evaluation of stress-intensity factors of cracks at notches
International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping, 1992Abstract A solution for determining the stress-intensity factor of two symmetric cracks emanating from the edge of an elliptical hole in an infinite plate is proposed. A finite-width correction factor is further established to take into account the finite-width influence in a finite plate.

Dimensionless Stress Intensity Factors of an Annular Notched Shaft
Key Engineering Materials, 2011The tip radius ρ, depth t and field angle α of notch and the geometrical sizes a and b of shaft are looked as descriptive parameters in the annular notched shaft. Taken the crack, blunt crack and notch as breach, the stress field and displacement field near the tip of breach which serve dimensionless factor fα(a/b) as descriptive parameter are obtained.

Stress intensity factors for a notched beam on an elastic foundation
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1975Abstract A partially cracked beam rests on an elastic foundation. Loads are applied which bend the beam. Stress intensity factors for the beam without a foundation have been extensively studied. In this paper, we show how the stress intensity factor is reduced by a foundation.
