NOTHOFAGUSAND PACIFIC BIOGEOGRAPHY
Cladistics, 1995Abstract —Gondwanan biogeography, particularly the relationships between southern South America, New Zealand, Australia, New Guinea and New Caledonia, has been much studied.Nothofagusis often used as the “test taxon”, and many papers have been directed at usingNothofagusto explain Gondwanan biogeography.

The first natural product isolation studies of Nothofagus gunnii (Hook.f.) Oerst and Nothofagus cunninghamii (Hook.f.) Oerst have been undertaken. A previously unreported stilbene derivative, pinosylvin monoacetate, was isolated from the leaves of N. gunnii, in addition to 14 known compounds; including the flavonoids galangin, pinobanksin, catechin and

The polyphenols of Nothofagus species—II.The heartwood of Nothofagus fusca
Phytochemistry, 1967Abstract From the heartwood of Nothofagus fusca were isolated taxifolin, catechin, aromadendrin, quercetin, kaempferol, naringenin, ellagic acid, gallic acid, resveratrol, 3,3′-di- O -methyl ellagic acid and a compound “nothofagin” with properties consistent with those of a mono-C-glycoside of 4,2′,4′,6′-tetrahydroxy-dihydrochalcone.

Genetic variation in Nothofagus (subgenus Nothofagus)
2017Subgenus Nothofagus consists of five woody species that are present in diverse forest associations of temperate forests of Argentina and Chile. Given the variable conditions of the physical environment, structural and functional intraspecific variation with genetic basis is expected.

The Gondwanan relict tree genus Nothofagus has generated much research due to its biogeographical significance in understanding the biota of the Southern Temperate Zone. However, the southern temperate forest arthropod fauna, including that of Nothofagus, has received less attention than northern temperate forest and tropical rainforest.

Ruil. Nothofagus alessandrii.
