The First Firn Core From the Cordillera Darwin Icefield: Implications for Future Ice Core Research

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 12, 28 June 2025.
Abstract The Southern Hemisphere westerly winds (SHWWs) (45–65°S) are important regulators of the Southern Hemisphere climate. The scarcity of observational records at the core of the wind belt hinders our understanding of the environmental impact and long‐term variability of the westerly winds.

Seed production and recruitment in primary and harvested Nothofagus pumilio forests: Influence of regional climate and years after cuttings

open access: yesForest Systems, 2015
Aim of study: Harvesting proposals (e.g. variable retention) for Nothofagus pumilio forests are based on canopy opening, to increase recruitment and enhance seedling growth, by modifying light and soil moisture.

Principal sensory experiences of forest visitors in four countries, for evidence‐based nature therapy

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 6, Issue 6, Page 2480-2493, December 2024.
Abstract To advance the theoretical and practical underpinnings for nature therapies, i.e. nature exposure as a means to improve mental health, we compared the most memorable sensory experiences reported by forest tourists in Australia, Chile, China and Japan. Sensory experiences are a fundamental driver of the psychological effects of nature exposure.

Biomass accumulation in natural Nothofagus pumilio stands Fireland-Chile

open access: yesForest Systems, 1995
The aim of this study was to analize the biomass accumulations in two Lenga (Nothofagus pumilio) natural forests, growing at 250 meters above sea level in Tierra del Fuego-Magallanes, Chile. Allometric equations were developed, based on destructive sampling (91 trees) in order to estimate the biomass.

Fine-scale genetic structure of Nothofagus pumilio (lenga) at contrasting elevations of the altitudinal gradient

open access: yesGenetica, 2013
Montane forests provide the natural framework to test for various ecological settings at distinct elevations as they may affect population demography, which in turn will affect the spatial genetic structure (SGS). We analyzed the fine-scale SGS of Nothofagus pumilio, which dominates mountain areas of Patagonia, in three pairs of sites at contrasting ...

Simulated warming does not impair seedling survival and growth of Nothofagus pumilio in the southern Andes

open access: yesPerspectives in Plant Ecology, Evolution and Systematics, 2013
Abstract It has been predicted that subalpine forests will be negatively affected by global warming; however, direct responses to experimental warming have been scarcely examined in these systems. In this study we evaluated the effects of higher temperatures with and without water addition on the survival and growth of recently emerged (small) and ...
