The novel «tongue-bite apparatus» in the knifefish family Notopteridae (Teleostei: Osteoglossomorpha): are kinematic patterns conserved within a clade? [PDF]

open access: yesZoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2001
Osteoglossomorph fishes are unique in possessing a specialized feeding mechanism, the tongue-bite apparatus (TBA) involving the hyoid apparatus. The TBA is associated with two unique behaviour patterns – raking and open-mouth chewing – used to disable and macerate prey.

Size-dependent dietary shifts in Chitala ornata (Osteichthyes; Notopteridae), an accidentally introduced exotic species in Sri Lanka

open access: yesSri Lanka Journal of Aquatic Sciences, 2016
Food and feeding biology and some morphological adaptation of an exotic fish species Chitala ornata in a riverine habitat in Sri Lanka was studied from March 2003 to July 2004 to investigate its size-dependent dietary shifts. The stomach contents of C. ornata were volumetrically analyzed and relative abundance of different food categories of different ...

Genetic divergence in natural populations of bronze featherback, Notopterus notopterus (Osteoglossiformes: Notopteridae) from five Indian rivers, analyzed through mtDNA ATPase6/8 regions

open access: yesMeta Gene, 2013
The present study characterized 842 bp fragment of mitochondrial ATP synthase 6 and 8 (ATPase6/8) genes in Notopterus notopterus. In all, 97 samples of N. notopterus were collected from five distant rivers; viz Satluj, Gomti, Yamuna, Brahmaputra and Mahanadi representing 4 river basins in India.

IS THERE ANY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FLUCTUATING ASYMMETRY AND REPRODUCTIVE INVESTMENT IN GIANT FEATHERBACK (CHITALA LOPIS, NOTOPTERIDAE)

open access: yesIndonesian Fisheries Research Journal, 2012
Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is often used as an indicator of perturbed development. As organisms placed under greater stress, less energy is available to buffer their development compared to unstressed individuals and increasing levels of asymmetry. Therefore, individual asymmetry scores within a population can be used as a measure of an organism’s ...

Seasonal dynamics in the trophic status of Papyrocranus afer (Günther, 1868) (Notopteridae) in a nigerian rainforest stream

open access: yes, 1994

Rediscovery of the giant featherback Chitala lopis (Notopteridae) in its type locality resolves decades of taxonomic confusion Running page head: Rediscovery of Chitala lopis

open access: yes, 2023
Unresolved taxonomy poses a significant challenge for conservation and recovery efforts of freshwater fishes in Indonesia. Asian knifefishes or featherbacks of the genus Chitala are found in the Indonesian Islands of Java, Sumatra and Borneo and the genus is currently thought to be composed of three species: Chitala lopis, Chitala hypselonotus, and ...
