Second‐Language Learning Facilitates Non‐Adjacent Dependency Learning: Effects Moderated by Specific Language

open access: yesCognitive Science, Volume 50, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Statistical learning allows language learners to implicitly track regularities in input. Prior studies have suggested that second language (L2) learning affects statistical learning, but the nature of this relationship remains unclear. Does L2 learning broadly enhance sensitivity to statistical structure, selectively tune learners to patterns ...

Syntactic and Prosodic Phrasal Alignment in Naturalistic Language

open access: yesCognitive Science, Volume 50, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Prosody is an intrinsic element of language production, linking together multiple levels of linguistic representation to shape both the structure and interpretation of utterances. However, common theories of prosodic phrasing in spoken language often fail to capture factors associated with planning and recovery, as well as performance‐based ...

The Roles of Vocabulary Size, Word Part Knowledge, and Semantic Transparency in Vocabulary Learning Through the Word Part Technique

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Linguistics, Volume 36, Issue 2, Page 1615-1627, May 2026.
ABSTRACT This study investigated the influence of learner‐ and word‐related variables on L2 vocabulary learning through the word part technique (WPT), a morphological mnemonic designed to strengthen form–meaning associations through knowledge of affixes and stems.

Record the track and track the record: On the call‐and‐response dynamics in Hip Hop practice

open access: yesJournal of Linguistic Anthropology, Volume 36, Issue 1, May 2026.
Abstract Call‐and‐response has primarily been studied in Black Atlantic artistic traditions. We transpose call‐and‐response dynamics to the writing and recording process of a Hip Hop studio session. Combining collaborative autoethnography with formal analysis and using Communication Accommodation Theory's conceptual parameters of conscious and ...

Polyrhythms in the Brain: Metrical Priming, Acoustic Balance, and Perceptual Biases

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, Volume 1559, Issue 1, May 2026.
This study investigates whether metrical priming modifies the neural responses to the beat of polyrhythms. After balancing the acoustic energy related to the two beat periodicities, we measured the neural activity synchronized to each primed beat using frequency tagging.
