Functional homogenization of terrestrial mammals outside protected areas in the Hengduan Mountains, China

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Despite the crucial role of human impacts on biodiversity loss, many assessments of this loss focus on single metrics, such as species richness, and overlook the multidimensional effects of human activities. Because of its importance to ecosystem functioning, we investigated the functional diversity of medium‐ and large‐sized mammal ...

Accessing the impacts of bamboo expansion on NPP and N cycling in evergreen broadleaved forest in subtropical China

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) expansion into adjacent forests is a widespread phenomenon in subtropical regions, and it has greatly changed the dominance hierarchy from trees to bamboos.

Monitoring Extended Half‐Life Factor VIII and IX Concentrates: Performance in Routine Clotting‐and Thrombin Generation Assays

open access: yesHaemophilia, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Monitoring extended half‐life (EHL) factor (F) VIII and FIX products is complex, as discrepant results are obtained in different laboratory assays. Aim To provide an overview on assay accuracy based on a re‐assessment of previously published data as well as laboratory results of EHL spiking experiments for specific factor assays ...

The influence of a cooling water system on waterbird habitat use in a coastal environment

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
This study investigated the impact of a cooling water system at a nuclear power plant in northern Europe on coastal waterbird habitat use. In winter, the cooling water system provided preferential areas for waterbirds with warm productive waters, and, more importantly, with ice‐free areas.

Response of Vegetation NPP to Multiscale Meteorological Drought in Southwest China

open access: yesShuitu Baochi Xuebao
[Objective] This study was aimed to explore the response mechanism of vegetation to drought at different times scales and clarify the frequent occurrence of extreme drought events in southwest China on vegetation growth. [Methods] Based on vegetation net

Biodiversity is a cauliflower under the sunlight [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
For a long time ecologists have questioned the variations of biodiversity across the latitudinal gradient. Recently it has emerged that the changes in [beta]-diversity are caused simply by changes in the sizes of species pools.

Low breeding propensity in a declining Arctic‐breeding swan revealed by telemetry data

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Many migratory bird populations are declining in the face of habitat degradation and climate change, making it important to identify which stages of their annual cycle are most affected in order to guide conservation measures. The Bewick's Swan Cygnus columbianus bewickii, an Arctic‐breeding waterfowl species, has suffered a dramatic population decline
