Negative phase velocity of electromagnetic waves and the cosmological constant

open access: yes, 2004
Examining the propagation of electromagnetic plane waves with the wavevector directed in opposition to the time-averaged Poynting vector in cosmological spacetime with piecewise uniform metric, we show that such negative-phase-velocity (NPV) propagation ...

Optimal seismic upgrade timing in seaports with increasing throughput demand via real options [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
A real options (RO) formulation is proposed for decision-making on the timing to upgrade the seismic performance of existing seaports with increasing throughput demand in earthquake prone areas.

Multimodal Cross‐Attentive Graph‐Based Framework for Predicting In Vivo Endocrine Disruptors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A multimodal cross‐attentive graph neural network integrates molecular graphs with androgen and estrogen adverse outcome pathway (AOP)–anchored in vitro assay signals to predict in vivo endocrine disruption. By fusing information on Tier‐1 AOP logits with chemical structures, the framework achieves high accuracy and provides assay‐traceable ...

Circulating TREM2 as a noninvasive diagnostic biomarker for NASH in patients with elevated liver stiffness

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Abstract Background and Aims Reliable noninvasive biomarkers are an unmet clinical need for the diagnosis of NASH. This study investigates the diagnostic accuracy of the circulating triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (plasma TREM2) as a biomarker for NASH in patients with NAFLD and elevated liver stiffness.

Mass‐Produced and High‐Performance Nanowell Biosensor Fabricated via Semiconductor Manufacturing for Rapid and Accurate COVID‐19 Diagnosis in the Clinical Field

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A semiconductor‐fabricated nanowell biosensor enables rapid, scalable, and highly reproducible detection of SARS‐CoV‐2 antigens from nasal swabs within ∼10 minutes. Clinical validation in 249 retrospective and 243 prospective patient samples demonstrates high sensitivity and specificity, minimal cross‐reactivity, and robust batch‐to‐batch ...

Project selection, income smoothing, and Bayesian learning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Capital rationing is an empirically well-documented phenomenon. This constraint requires managers to make investment decisions between mutually exclusive investment opportunities. In a multiperiod agency setting, this paper analyses accounting rules that

A Rational Optimization Approach for the Development of a Multiplexed Lateral Flow Immunoassay: Detection of Nonepithelial Ovarian Cancer Markers in Human Serum

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study outlines the developmental pipeline of a multiplexed nanozyme‐based lateral flow immunoassay for the purpose of ovarian germ cell tumor detection. It demonstrates the application of a design of experiments optimization approach for nanozyme probe conjugate development.

Prognostic Value of Psoas Major Muscle Volume in Assessing Sarcopenia in Elderly Patients With Rectal Cancer

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
This study investigates the prognostic utility of a novel volumetric indicator—psoas volume index (PVI)—for assessing sarcopenia in elderly rectal cancer patients. Sarcopenia classified by our proposed PVI cut‐off values was associated with poor nutritional and inflammatory status, and patients with low PVI showed significantly worse long‐term outcomes.
