Technology assessment between risk, uncertainty and ignorance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The use of most if not all technologies is accompanied by negative side effects, While we may profit from today’s technologies, it is most often future generations who bear most risks.

Molecular characterisation of human penile carcinoma and generation of paired epithelial primary cell lines

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Generation of two normal and tumour (cancerous) paired human cell lines using an established tissue culture technique and their characterisation is described. Cell lines were characterised at cellular, protein, chromosome and gene expression levels and for HPV status.

Protocol for induction and study of DNA double-strand breaks in mammalian cells using PALM microdissection and expansion microscopy

open access: yesSTAR Protocols
Summary: We present a protocol to induce localized DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) in mammalian monolayer cells, using the PALM MicroBeam microdissector, followed by high-resolution visualization through expansion microscopy (ExM).

Effective therapeutic targeting of CTNNB1‐mutant hepatoblastoma with WNTinib

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
WNTinib, a Wnt/CTNNB1 inhibitor, was tested in hepatoblastoma (HB) experimental models. It delayed tumor growth and improved survival in CTNNB1‐mutant in vivo models. In organoids, WNTinib outperformed cisplatin and showed enhanced efficacy in combination therapy, supporting its potential as a targeted treatment for CTNNB1‐mutated HB.

Ethics and Nuclear Energy

open access: yesZbornik Pravnog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Rijeci, 2001
Should the scientist be a morally unbiased person? This is the eternal question asked by many great thinkers interested in science. The answer is hard to find. Scientists are expected to take into consideration the consequences of their actions before they actually start to act.

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve

After Fukushima: The precautionary principle revisited

open access: yesVerbum et Ecclesia, 2012
Etienne de Villiers, more than other theologians, elaborates on basic elements of a Christian ethics of responsibility. He distinguishes between retrospective and prospective responsibility.

Protocol for imaging nuclear pore complexes on isolated nuclei of zebrafish early embryos by field emission scanning electron microscopy

open access: yesSTAR Protocols, 2023
Summary: Here, we present a protocol to observe the three-dimensional surface of nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) of vertebrate early embryos by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM).

The PI3Kδ inhibitor roginolisib (IOA‐244) preserves T‐cell function and activity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Identification of novel PI3K inhibitors with limited immune‐related adverse effects is highly sought after. We found that roginolisib and idelalisib inhibit chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells and Treg suppressive functions to similar extents, but roginolisib affects cytotoxic T‐cell function and promotion of pro‐inflammatory T helper subsets to a
