Nuclear power has unresolved challenges in the long-term management of radioactive wastes. A critical factor for the future of an expanded nuclear power industry is the choice of the fuel cycle – what type of fuel is used, what types of reactors “burn” the fuel, and the method of disposal of spent fuel.

Abstract The nuclear fuel cycle is described, including the distinction between the open cycle and the closed cycle. Mining to create yellow cake, and enrichment by gas centrifuge using uranium hexafluoride (HEX), are explained. Fuel fabrication of uranium oxide pellets completes the front-end of the fuel cycle.
