Military nuclear waste disposal

open access: yesEos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 1984
A National Research Council (NRC) panel has endorsed a plan for a proposed underground military nuclear waste disposal facility located on a site near Carlsbad, N.M. The Department of Energy (DOE) asked NRC to evaluate the geologic suitability of the site. The NRC panel, chaired by Frank L.

Molecular Simulation of Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework Membranes for Inorganic Salt Separation

open access: yesAdvanced Theory and Simulations, EarlyView.
Six functionalized TpPa‐based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are characterized using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to assess water permeance and salt rejection. The TpPa‐SO3H COF membrane achieves the highest sodium sulfate rejection (>98%) while maintaining relatively high water permeance compared to commercial nanofiltration ...

Formation of Condition‐Dependent Alpha‐Synuclein Fibril Strain in Artificial Cerebrospinal Fluid

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
α‐synuclein aggregation in artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) leads to a distinct conformation with an electron density pocket motif found in aggregates from PD and MSA patients. Such fibrils has low stability outside the reaction conditions, hinting about the influence of cerebrospinal fluid components not only on the formation, but also on the ...

The Resistance Movement of Aboriginal People to Fight Against the Plans for a Nuclear Waste Dump in South Australia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Aborigine is the indigenous people of Australia who have attempted to oppose the proposal for South Australia to host an International nuclear dump. Even though the rights of indigenous people have been recognized by the United Nations Declaration on the

Hyperelastic Starch Hydrogel Configures Edible and Biodegradable All‐Components for Soft Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Hyperelastic starch hydrogel is tailored via a phase separation strategy of solvent‐antisolvent co‐modulation. The mechanical performance of starch hydrogel is widely tuned with maximum strains: 194.4–361.4%; maximum tensile stresses: 34–192 kPa; and Young's moduli: 36.0–205.8 kPa. Notably, the hydrogel achieves complete soil degradation within 24 days

On the hydration of unsaturated barriers for high-level nuclear waste disposal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The paper addresses the topic of the effects of hydration and temperature on the final state of an engineered barrier composed of compacted bentonite. In particular the distributions of water content and dry density are examined.

Procyanidin Capsules Combat ALF by Restoring Mitochondrial Homeostasis and Inhibiting Necroptosis via the PGAM5/DRP1/PINK1 Pathway

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A biomimetic self‐assembly strategy, Procyanidin Capsules (PC‐Ca), has been developed, which has great stability, bioavailability, and liver‐targeting efficacy and modulates the KEAP1‐NRF2 axis to inhibit ROS formation and necroptosis, regulate mitochondrial homeostasis through the PGAM5/DRP1/PINK1 signaling pathway in thioacetamide (TAA)‐induced ALF ...
