Assessment of nugget diameter of resistance spot welding using pulse eddy current thermography

Thermosense: Thermal Infrared Applications XL, 2018
This paper deals with the use of eddy current thermography for spot weld nugget diameter assessment. As a nondestructive testing method, eddy current thermography is successfully used to give an estimation of the nugget diameter of resistance spot weld.

Study on Nugget Diameter and Joint Strength of Dissimilar Metals in Capacitor Charging Projection Welding

Key Engineering Materials, 2011
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of operating conditions on nugget diameter and joint strength of KOVAR alloy and SPCC steel in projection welding of dissimilar metals. All projection welds were produced with a capacitor charging power supply. Harris and Riley type projection was embossed on SPCC steel sheet.

Correlating variations in the dynamic power signature to nugget diameter in resistance spot welding using Kriging model

Measurement, 2019
Abstract In this work, a systematic research was undertaken to predict the nugget size of the welding joints in real time through monitoring the dynamic power signature for TC2 titanium alloy. The welding current in the welding process was measured by a Rogowski coil and the welding voltage was obtained by means of clipping two leads onto the upper ...

Study on real-time measurement of nugget diameter for resistance spot welding using a neuro-fuzzy algorithm

Proceedings of the 21st IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37510), 2004
Resistance spot welding (RSW) is still the most successful sheet metal joining method in the automobile industry. However, an effective quality evaluation method has not yet been developed. Real-time quality inspection of RSW is necessary in order to deal with all kinds of problems during welding.

Using a New Electrical Contact Resistance Model for Investigating Nugget Diameter Variations in Small-Scale Resistance Spot Welding

Iranian Journal of Science and Technology, Transactions of Mechanical Engineering, 2017
Small-scale resistance spot welding is used frequently in various industries. The key factor that affects the welding quality is the nugget size. In this paper, the relationship between the nugget size and the input process parameters is investigated.

Effect of welding nugget diameter on the fatigue strength of the resistance spot welded joints of different steel sheets

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2006
Abstract This paper presents an experimental study on the fatigue strength of resistance spot welded galvanized steel sheets and austenitic stainless steel (AISI 304) sheets. The sheet materials were joined by using resistance spot welding as a lap joint. Material combination and nugget diameter were selected as experimental parameters.

Investigation of the correlation between dynamic electrode force signals and nugget diameter in resistance spot welding

Measurement Science and Technology
Abstract As a process signal in resistance spot welding, dynamic electrode force more prominently reflects the nugget formation process. To quantify the correlation between dynamic electrode force and nugget diameter, a non-destructive measurement method based on dynamic electrode force is proposed.

Evaluation of the nugget diameter in spot welded joints between two steel sheets by means of a potential drop technique

Measurement Science and Technology, 2015
A potential drop technique which utilizes the electrical circuit used in resistance spot welding is reported. Spot welded samples comprising two steel sheets were inserted between the two Cu electrodes and a constant direct current was supplied between the electrodes.

Multi-objective optimisation for indentation rate, nugget diameter and tensile load in resistance spot welding using Taguchi-based grey relational analysis

International Journal of Materials and Product Technology, 2021
In this study, a multi-objective optimisation method based on grey relational analysis with weighted responses is conducted to optimise the RSW parameters of electrode force, welding current, and welding time. Three objectives, such as indentation rate, nugget diameter, and tensile load, are simultaneously optimised.

The influences of nugget diameter on the mechanical properties and the failure mode of resistance spot-welded metastable austenitic stainless steel

Materials & Design, 2012
Abstract Resistance spot-welded tensile shear specimens with three nugget diameters— 5 t , 6 t and 7 t —were prepared with low- and high-strength cold-rolled 301L plates. Static overload and fatigue examinations of the spot welds were conducted to investigate the effects of the nugget diameter on their mechanical ...
