Abstract Many languages distinguish numeral classifiers in their grammar systems categorizing nominals in terms of their inherent nature, such as animacy, shape, form, and arrangement. Kazakh, a Turkic language of Central Asia, distinguishes numeral classifiers, which are used in numeral classifier constructions consisting of a numeral, a numeral ...

Contact-induced reduction, loss, and emergence of numeral classifiers
International audienceThis paper examines contact-induced change in numeral classifier systems based on two case studies of East Asian languages. Study 1 investigates contact-induced loss and emergence of numeral classifiers in different languages of the

Functions of gender and numeral classifiers in Nepali
International audienceWe examine the complex nominal classification system in Nepali (Indo-European, Indic), a language spoken at the intersection of the Indo-European and Sino-Tibetan language families, which are usually associated with prototypical ...

Slavic aspectual prefixes and numeral classifiers: Two kinds of lexico-grammatical unitizers [PDF]
What do Slavic aspectual prefixes have in common with numeral classifiers? Our answer is that the parallels are compelling, both in terms of breadth and depth.

Numeral classifiers in Munya, a Tibeto-Burman language
The topic of the chapter is Munya, a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in the western part of Sichuan Province, China. Classifiers in Munya include numeral classifiers and verbal action classifiers. There are two sets of numerals in Munya, a native set and a

AbstractLanguages with sortal classifiers (clf) are distributed across the world, with a large concentration in East and South (east) Asia. Across the world’s classifier languages, few are attested which order classifiers before numerals in counted noun phrases (clf num).

From Bayesian Classifiers to Possibilistic Classifiers for Numerical Data
2010Naive Bayesian classifiers are well-known for their simplicity and efficiency. They rely on independence hypotheses, together with a normality assumption, which may be too demanding, when dealing with numerical data. Possibility distributions are more compatible with the representation of poor data.

A hybrid classifier for recognizing handwritten numerals
Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition, 2002The authors propose a combination of rule-based and neural classifiers to recognize unconstrained handwritten numerals, 0 to 9. During training, the rule-based classifier identifies the candidate set for each character class. The candidate set of a character class, i, comprises the character classes with which a pattern of i is most likely to be ...

A classifier for Bangla handwritten numeral recognition
Expert Systems with Applications, 2012This paper presents a novel pattern classification approach - a kernel and Bayesian discriminant based classifier which utilizes the distribution characteristics of the samples in each class. A kernel combined with Bayesian discriminant in the subspace spanned by the eigenvectors which are associated with the smaller eigenvalues in each class is ...
