On the Complexity of Numerical Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes21st Annual IEEE Conference on Computational Complexity (CCC'06), 2006
We study two quite different approaches to understanding the complexity of fundamental problems in numerical analysis. We show that both hinge on the question of understanding the complexity of the following problem, which we call PosSlp: Given a division-free straight-line program producing an integer N, decide whether N>0.

Analysis of Numerical Errors [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2012
Abstract This paper provides a general framework for the quantitative analysis of stochastic dynamic models. We review the convergence properties of some numerical algorithms and available methods to bound approximation errors. We then address the convergence and accuracy properties of the simulated moments.

Building Suitable Datasets for Soft Computing and Machine Learning Techniques from Meteorological Data Integration: A Case Study for Predicting Significant Wave Height and Energy Flux

open access: yesEnergies, 2021
Meteorological data are extensively used to perform environmental learning. Soft Computing (SC) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques represent a valuable support in many research areas, but require datasets containing information related to the topic ...

Wind energy production by means of diffusion stochastic process. Parameters estimation [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences
In this work, we attempt to model wind energy production via a stochastic diffusion process. We consider an Ito-type stochastic differential * equation (SDE) and determine the probabilistic characteristics of the stochastic process solution, particularly

Human intracranial pulsatility during the cardiac cycle: a computational modelling framework

open access: yesFluids and Barriers of the CNS, 2022
Background Today’s availability of medical imaging and computational resources set the scene for high-fidelity computational modelling of brain biomechanics. The brain and its environment feature a dynamic and complex interplay between the tissue, blood,

Numerical analysis for nematic electrolytes [PDF]

open access: yesIMA Journal of Numerical Analysis, 2020
Abstract We consider a system of nonlinear PDEs modeling nematic electrolytes, and construct a dissipative solution with the help of its implementable, structure-inheriting and space–time discretization. Computational studies are performed to study the mutual effects of electric, elastic and viscous effects onto the molecules in a ...

Numerical equilibrium analysis for structured consumer resource models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In this paper, we present methods for a numerical equilibrium and stability analysis for models of a size structured population competing for an unstructured resource.

Numerically stable cointegration analysis [PDF]

open access: yesComputational Statistics & Data Analysis, 2002
The authors discuss the cointegration in non-stationary time series and their statistical analysis using vector autoregression. Restricting on a reduced rank situation the analysis can be performed using maximum likelihood methods that require the solution of a generalized eigenproblem.

Chromatic Analysis of Numerical Programs

open access: yes2023 IEEE 30th Symposium on Computer Arithmetic (ARITH), 2023
This paper introduces the concept of chromatic numbers, which allows to tint a scalar or a set of scalars to estimate the relations between input and output variables under additive property. This consists in proposing a decomposition of a resulting value as a sum of tinted values.

Order 1 autoregressive process of finite length

open access: yesJournal of Numerical Analysis and Approximation Theory, 2007
The stochastic processes of finite length defined by recurrence relations request additional relations specifying the first terms of the process analogously to the initial conditions for the differential equations.
