The Corwin (1960) scale measuring role conception and role deprivation was compared with a newly devised instrument that measures bureaucratic, professional, and service-traditional role concepts. Although further work remains to be done on the new scale, role conceptions of nurses in the 1970s are different from those in the 1950s.
