Reducing neonatal mortality rate with nurse‐midwives
Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health, 1971ABSTRACTNewborn health indices were measured before, during, and after a demonstration nurse‐midwife program introduced to relieve a health manpower shortage at a county hospital in rural California. During the program, prenatal care increased, and prematurity and neonatal mortality rate decreased at the county hospital.

An increasing number of nurse-midwives have expanded their roles to include the use of this technology. This article reviews the basic principles of ultrasound physics, the content of ultrasound examinations, and the performance of basic scans.
