Evolving resistance patterns in Tetranychus urticae and Bemisia tabaci in Greece

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Greek populations of T. urticae and B. tabaci exhibit evolving multi‐resistance, confirmed by bioassays and molecular markers, highlighting the urgent need for evidence‐based resistance monitoring in IPM. Abstract BACKGROUND Pesticide resistance in agricultural pests remains a major barrier to effective and sustainable crop protection.

Potential of bacteria isolated from chitin‐enriched soil against Euschistus heros (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae)

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
B. thuringiensis and B. altitudinis, isolated from chitin‐enriched soil, causing mortality in Euchistus heros under laboratory conditions. First report of B. altitudinis in the control of E. heros. Abstract BACKGROUND Biological control using entomopathogenic microorganisms is a more sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides for managing insect ...

Common Preemergence Herbicide Application Equipment and Considerations for Container Nursery Operations

open access: yesEDIS
Weeds are a costly and continual threat to ornamental nursery profitability. Due to a lack of labeled postemergence herbicide options, growers typically rely on timely preemergence herbicide applications for weed control, among other methods such as ...

First genome sequence of a European Alternaria brassicae isolate and genes involved in early development of alternaria leaf spot on Brassica juncea

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
This article reports the first genome sequence of a UK Alternaria brassicae isolate. Dual RNA‐sequencing profiling of A. brassicae‐infected Brassica juncea leaves identified differentially expressed genes involved in pathogenicity and host response pathways in moderately resistant Sej‐2 (2) and moderately susceptible Pusa Jaikisan cultivars.

Breeding maize under biodynamic-organic conditions for nutritional value and N efficiency/N2 fixation

open access: yesOpen Agriculture, 2019
An overview is given for an ongoing maize breeding program that improves populations, inbreds, and hybrids in the Midwestern USA. Breeding and selection occurred under biodynamic conditions in Wisconsin, on an organic winter nursery in Puerto Rico, a ...

Glucosinolate hydrolysis products suppress entomopathogenic nematodes in vitro but do not protect sequestering flea beetle larvae in vivo

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
The flea beetle's glucosinolate‐based chemical defense fails to protect larvae from nematode infection. However, the defense inhibits the nematode's symbiotic bacteria, thereby potentially impairing nematode reproduction and biocontrol success. Abstract BACKGROUND The efficacy of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in the biological control of insect ...

Mulching as Alternative to Chemical Weed Control in Nursery Conteinerized Crops

open access: yesAdvances in horticultural science, 2009
Weed control effectiveness of five mulching materials was determined in three container-grown ornamental crops (Photinia xfraseri 'Red Robin',Prunus laurocerasus 'Rotundifolia' and Thujaplicata 'Atrovirens'). Mulches tested were: AW-Disk® (a by-product of coconut); Basotop® (made of almond drupe shells without glue); two other materials made of vegetal
