The circulation of nutrients is essential to the survival of all living things. The supply of water and oxygen, the temperature and acidity in the soil are of great significance to this process. In a tropical rainforest, the cycle is rapid because the temperature and humidity are just right.

Nutrient Cycles and Nutrient Limitations in the South
1989The impact of acidic deposition on forest soils depends largely on the nutrient cycles of the forest, and management treatments (such as fertilization) may also be important. As noted in chapter 2, if a forest utilizes the nitrate or sulfate from atmospheric deposition, the associated acidity is neutralized.

The cycling of nutrient elements is the crux of all ecological considerations because of their limited availability in the biosphere. The concept of growthlimiting nutrients has been discussed in Chapter 2 as well as the essential elements for all biological systems. It follows that continued utilization of one element as a nutrient by a given category

Nutrient Cycling and Nutrient Use Efficiency
The American Naturalist, 1982Forest ecosystems systematically produce more litterfall dry mass per unit of nitrogen in sites with less aboveground nitrogen circulation. This pattern is observed both within and among tropical, temperate deciduous, coniferous, Mediterranean, and fertilized ecosystems.

Nutrient cycling and sustainability
Fertilizer Research, 1995A historical survey of the changes in the concept of sustainable development is given. Clarification of the interrelations between food security strategy and sustainability in agriculture are outlined and the possible role of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in environmental pollution examined.

Modelling nutrient cycling and integrating nutrient cycling into growth models
2004Models available to predict growth of forest plantations include: process-based, architectural and growth and yield models, each dealing with a particular aspect of the forest production. As a part of plantation sustainability research in Congo, these three approaches are being tested.
