Molecular Survey of Anaplasmataceae Agents, Rickettsia spp., Bartonella spp., and Piroplasmids in Ectoparasites from Cave-Dwelling Bats in Mainland Portugal [PDF]

open access: yesPathogens
Bats and their ectoparasites play a crucial role in understanding the ecology and transmission of vector-borne pathogens, yet these dynamics remain poorly studied in Portugal.

Bat flies (Diptera: Streblidae, Nycteribiidae) parasitic on bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) at Parque Estadual da Cantareira, São Paulo, Brazil: parasitism rates and host-parasite associations

open access: yesMemorias Do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2005
A total of 443 bat flies belonging to the families Nycteribiidae and Strelidae, were collected on 22 species of bats (Molossidae, Phyllostomidae, and Vespertilionidae) from Parque Estadual da Cantareira (São Paulo, Brazil), between January, 2000 and ...

New records of Basilia Miranda-Ribeiro, 1903 (Diptera: Hippoboscoidea: Nycteribiidae) from Colombia [PDF]

open access: yesArquivos de Zoologia, 2023
The Nycteribiidae is a group of ectoparasitic and hematophagous flies associated with bats and barely known in Colombia. The revision of previously collected material and additional fieldwork through various regions in Colombia let us to identify ...

Molecular Detection and Genetic Diversity of Bat-Associated Bartonella spp. in Bat Ectoparasites Collected From Ratchaburi Province, Thailand. [PDF]

open access: yesVet Med Sci
Bat ectoparasites collected from four insectivorous bat species were identified through mitochondrial gene analysis. This study provides the first evidence of bat‐associated Bartonella species in ectoparasites, including bat flies (Phthiridium sp., Raymondia sp.

Polychromophilus spp. (Haemosporida: Plasmodiidae): First Molecular Detection in Bat Flies From Brazilian Bats. [PDF]

open access: yesIntegr Zool
This study identifies Polychromophilus sp. in blood‐feeding flies (Basilia speiseri and Basilia lindolphoi) from Myotis nigricans bats in Brazil, marking the first molecular detection of the parasite in an insect vector in this country. Two haplotypes were identified, both within the Polychromophilus murinus group.

Morphological and molecular data on the bat flies, Basilia silvae (Brèthes, 1913) and Trichobius parasiticus Gervais, 1844 parasitizing Chilean bats. [PDF]

open access: yesMed Vet Entomol
We determined morphological and molecularly two species of bat flies: T. parasiticus (Streblidae), and B. silvae (Nycteribiidae). We generated the first sequences for both species in the country for the cytochrome oxidase subunit I. We do recover monophyletic groups for both species, and we discussed the tree topology.

Catalogue of American Nycteribiidae (Diptera, Hippoboscoidea) Catálogo dos Nycteribiidae Americanos (Diptera, Hippoboscoidea) [PDF]

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Entomologia, 2007
A catalogue of the family Nycteribiidae (Diptera, Hippoboscoidea) of the New World is presented. Two genera and 52 species are listed in alphabetical order. Each genus account lists synonymies and type species, and each species account lists type locality and host, disposition of type material, geographic and host distribution, and a detailed ...

Molecular Detection and Isolation of Bartonella Species in Bats and Their Ectoparasites Along the China-Myanmar Border. [PDF]

open access: yesTransbound Emerg Dis
Bartonella are parasitic pathogens that infect many mammals, including humans, and cause significant diseases. This study investigates the presence, genetic diversity, and tissue tropism of Bartonella in bats and their ectoparasites along the China–Myanmar border. Bats and ectoparasites were collected from Yingjiang, Ruili, and Gengma Counties.

Bat Flies of the Family Streblidae (Diptera: Hippoboscoidea) Host Relatives of Medically and Agriculturally Important “Bat-Associated” Viruses

open access: yesViruses, 2021
Bat flies (Hippoboscoidea: Nycteribiidae and Streblidae) are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites of bats. We collected streblid bat flies from the New World (México) and the Old World (Uganda), and used metagenomics to identify their viruses. In México,
