Study of Mitogenomes Provides Implications for the Phylogenetics and Evolution of the Infraorder Muscomorpha in Diptera

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 1, January 2025.
This study comparatively analyzed the mitogenome characteristics of 131 species that represent 18 superfamilies in Muscomorpha, in which mitogenomes of 16 species are newly sequenced and annotated herein. Further, we deduced their phylogenetics using maximum likelihood, and discussed their divergence time and evolution combined with taxonomy and ...

Gastrointestinal Parasites of Zoonotic Importance Detected in Bats in the Conservation Area of Semuliki National Park, Western Uganda

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology Research, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Bat guano may contain zoonotic parasites that contaminate the environment and/or serve as a potential source of infection to humans and animals. Repeated bat–human exposure could be a risk factor for zoonosis. To date, knowledge on the status of bat gastrointestinal parasites (GIPs) in Uganda is limited.

Winter appearance of ectoparasite communities living bats (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) in the artificial caves of the Samara Luka

open access: yesИзвестия высших учебных заведений. Поволжский регион: Естественные науки
Background. Ectoparasites living bats are natural reserves of many dangerous zoonotic agents, which determines the relevance of studying the structure of their communities and searching for factors that determine them. The purpose of the study is to ...

Diversity of bartonellae in mites (Acari: Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae and Spinturnicidae) of boreal forest bats: Association of host specificity of mites and habitat selection of hosts with vector potential

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 518-529, December 2024.
Bats play a major role in the circulation of zoonotic pathogens. Mites (Macronyssidae and Spinturnicidae) may facilitate the long‐term maintenance (and even local recurrence) of Bartonella‐infestations. Mites may transmit several distinct Bartonella strains, which cluster phylogenetically close to Bartonella species known for their zoonotic role ...

Effects of fungal infection on the survival of parasitic bat flies

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2020
Background Parasites are able to alter numerous aspects of their hosts’ life history, behaviour and distribution. One central question in parasitology is to determine the degree of impact that parasites have on their hosts.

The Nycteribiidae of the Ethiopian Region and Madagascar

open access: yesParasitology, 1957
Only 10 species of Nycteribiidae have been recorded previously from the Ethiopian Region and 3 further species from Madagascar. The writer recently described the new genusDipseliopodawith three species, a new species ofEucampsipodafrom Africa and another from Madagascar, (Theodor, 1955), 3 new species ofBasiliaand a new species ofTripseliafrom Africa ...

Ornithomya biloba, Pseudolynchia garzettae and Pseudolynchia canariensis (Diptera: Hippoboscidae): three new United Kingdom colonists and potential disease vectors

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 38, Issue 2, Page 160-171, June 2024.
A citizen science project found evidence that three species of louse fly, which had previously been considered to be vagrants, are now breeding in the United Kingdom. Pseudolynchia garzettae was found on Nightjars, Ornithomya biloba on Swallows and Sand Martins and free flying Pseudolynchia canariensis were found in London.

Updated species list of the bat ectoparasitic flies (Diptera: Nycteribiidae and Streblidae) in the state of Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil

open access: yesRevista Mexicana de Biodiversidad, 2019
Bat ectoparasitic flies are highly specialized hematophagous insects exclusive to Chiroptera. Between November 2014 and August 2016, we surveyed these ectoparasites in urban and protected areas in the state of Paraíba, northeastern Brazil. We recorded 15
