The lecture will define nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs) and show the future development of NZEB towards the plus energy buildings. The Building envelope will be shown as the basis of NZEB, with its role and requirements. Optimization of thermal insulation thickness will be discussed as a key to achieving a cost-optimal NZEB.

Within European neZEH project, national nZEB definitions were collected. Ten available definitions revealed to be remarkably different by content and ambition level. Not all of them were based on primary energy, and values between 20 and 200 do not allow meaningful comparison.
