THE DISTRIBUTION AND EFFECTS OF GENES CAUSING F1 WEAKNESS IN ORYZA BREVILIGULATA AND O. GLABERRIMA

open access: yesGenetics, 1972
ABSTRACT Weakness of F1 plants is frequently found in hybrids between strains of Oryza breviligulata (wild) and O. glaberrima (cultivated rice) endemic to West Africa. A set of two complementary dominant weakness genes, W1 and W2, was found to control the observed F1 weakness.

How Does Cultural and Colonial Heritage Affect Optimal Branding Strategies? Evidence From the Rice Sector in Senegal

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Africa's cultural and colonial heritage has profoundly segmented rice markets. Whereas in ancient centers of rice domestication, consumers maintained preferences for local rice consistent with their cultural heritage, preferences have shifted toward imported Asian rice in coastal areas around seaports, due to prior exposure to colonial import ...

Staging an Experience of Cultural Heritage Preservation: Consumers' Willingness to Pay for Heirloom Rice in the Philippines

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Cordillera Administrative Region in the Philippines is home to terraced rice embedded in centuries of cultural heritage. However, weak market incentives threaten sustained production, jeopardizing indigenous communities' cultural heritage and the in situ biodiversity of rice genetic resources.

Determination of Aflatoxins and Selected Heavy Metals in Rice Varieties Cultivated in Fogera, Amhara Region, Ethiopia

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a vital staple crop for nearly half the world's population. This study investigates the levels of aflatoxins (AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, and AFG2) and selected heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Cr) and essential elements (Mn, Fe, Mg, Cu, and Zn) in rice varieties cultivated in Fogera, Amhara Region, Ethiopia.

QTL mapping of grain quality traits from the interspecific cross Oryza sativa × O. glaberrima

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Genetics, 2004
International rice export markets are increasing demands for rapid improvements in grain quality characteristics. The African rice Oryza glaberrima is a new potential source of genes that will enhance the eating, cooking, and milling properties of the rice grain.

Conservative roots confer a larger microbial carbon pump efficacy than acquisitive roots by regulating microbial life‐history strategy

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Root activity creates unique microbial hotspots in the rhizosphere by influencing the metabolic activities of surrounding soil microorganisms, profoundly regulating the dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC). However, how root economic strategies affect the formation and

Genetic Variations in Dry Matter Production, Nitrogen Uptake, and Nitrogen Use Efficiency in the AA Genome Oryza Species Grown under Different Nitrogen Conditions

open access: yesPlant Production Science, 2013
To clarify the genotypic variation of nitrogen (N) response in the AA genome Oryza species, we investigated dry matter production, N uptake, N and water use efficiencies (NUE and WUE), bleeding sap rate (BR), and root morphological traits at vegetative ...

Divergent roles of ent‐kaurene oxidase paralogs in rice momilactone biosynthesis

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
Rice contains a five‐gene tandem array of genes encoding members of the ent‐kaurene oxidase (KO) family, with OsKOL4 and OsKOL5 playing divergent roles in momilactone metabolism, but both acting in the production of antifungal and antibacterial phytoalexins, which are important for disease resistance.

Estimativa da área foliar de Cissampelos glaberrima usando dimensões lineares do limbo foliar Leaf area estimate of Cissampelos glaberrima using linear dimensions of the leaf blade

open access: yesPlanta Daninha, 2002
Com o objetivo de obter uma equação matemática que, através de parâmetros lineares dimensionais das folhas, permitisse a estimativa da área foliar de Cissampelos glaberrima, estudaram-se relações entre a área foliar real (Sf) e os parâmetros dimensionais
