A number of procedures are available, but the effects of these surgical procedures compared with medical management and with each other are uncertain. To assess the effects of surgery for morbid obesity.Studies were ...

Surgical Clinics of North America, 2001
Although obesity is an easy diagnosis to make, its etiologies, pathophysiology, and symptomatology are extraordinarily complex. Progress in surgical technique and anesthesiological management has substantially improved the safety of performing operations on the severely obese in the last 20 years.

Laparoscopic Ileogastrostomy for Morbid Obesity [PDF]
This paper describes the technique of laparoscopic ileogastrostomy which we developed during the summer of 1993. The procedure is identical to that of our 'open' ileogastrostomy except that it is performed laparoscopically. The aim of the surgery is to increase ambulation of the patient, while reducing pain, morbidity, and the chance of apnea (due to ...

Gastric bypass in morbid obesity
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1980Gastric operations for the treatment of morbid obesity have been standardized. They require close adherence to specifications for success. The upper stomach volume should be measured intraoperatively and fashioned to a capacity of 50 ml at a pressure of 25 to 30 cm of saline. The outlet should be no larger than 12 mm in diameter.

Gastroplasty in Morbid Obesity
Surgical Clinics of North America, 1979Gastroplasty is effective only when a small fundic reservoir is formed with a nonexpanding 12-mm channel. Support of the channel with a seromuscular suture appears to achieve this goal. Candidates for gastroplasty should be carefully screened before surgery and given support and nutritional education after surgery.

Critical Care Nursing Quarterly, 2003
The purpose of this article is to discuss the disease of morbid obesity, its causes, and its impact upon an individual's life. Medical personnel must have a clear understanding that morbid obesity is a disease largely due to genetic makeup and not a personality defect or lack of control.

LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY FOR MORBID OBESITY
Surgical Clinics of North America, 2001Minimally invasive approaches to bariatric surgery offer significant advantages over those of open surgery. The potential of laparoscopic approaches to reduce the morbidity of these operations may exceed that of laparoscopic cholecystecomy and laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication because the access incisions for open bariatric operations have relatively ...
