In the year 393, during the Synod of Hippo, Augustine, still a presbyter at the time, was invited to speak and to give a profound explanation of the Symbol of Faith to the bishops of Africa gathered there. The content of that sermon, suitably reworked, later became the De fide et Symbolo. The work has the characteristics of an explanation of the Creed.
