Change Detection in Coral Reef Environment Using High-Resolution Images: Comparison of Object-Based and Pixel-Based Paradigms

open access: yesISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information, 2018
Despite increases in the spatial resolution of satellite imagery prompting interest in object-based image analysis, few studies have used object-based methods for monitoring changes in coral reefs.

A machine learning approach to statistical shape models with applications to medical image analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Statistical shape models have become an indispensable tool for image analysis. The use of shape models is especially popular in computer vision and medical image analysis, where they were incorporated as a prior into a wide range of different algorithms.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Preprocessing for content-based image retrieval

open access: yes, 2009
The research focuses on image retrieval problems where the query is formed as an image of a specific object of interest. The broad aim is to investigate pre-processing for retrieval of images of objects when an example image containing the object is ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Operational Automatic Remote Sensing Image Understanding Systems: Beyond Geographic Object-Based and Object-Oriented Image Analysis (GEOBIA/GEOOIA). Part 1: Introduction

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2012
According to existing literature and despite their commercial success, state-of-the-art two-stage non-iterative geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) systems and three-stage iterative geographic object-oriented image analysis (GEOOIA) systems ...

Binary histogram based split/merge object detection using FPGAs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Tracking of objects using colour histograms has proven successful in various visual surveillance systems. Such systems rely heavily on similarity matrices to compare the appearance of targets in successive frames.

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.
