Jetting in Oblique, Asymmetric Impacts
Icarus, 1998Abstract Experiments were conducted to determine the composition of jets emitted in asymmetric oblique impacts. The jets were sampled indirectly using witness plates, which were quantitatively analyzed by SEM. The results indicate that decreasing the thickness of the inclined target plate increases the relative abundance of projectile in the jet ...

Oblique ballistic impact behavior of composites
International Journal of Damage Mechanics, 2013An analytical model has been presented for oblique ballistic impact behavior of composites based on wave theory and energy balance between the projectile and the target. The change in obliquity of the projectile during ballistic impact has been studied. The nature of obliquity change depends on the behavior of the target material just after impact and

Debris cloud distributions at oblique impacts
International Journal of Impact Engineering, 2008Abstract The purpose of this study is to obtain mass, spray angle and velocity distributions of fragments in debris cloud generated by oblique impacts on an aluminum alloy plate. Hypervelocity impact tests were performed with a two-stage light gas gun at Kyushu Institute of Technology. The impact angles were changed to 0°, 15°, 30°, 45° and 60°.

The oblique impact of elastic spheres
Wear, 1976Abstract A solution is developed for the oblique impact of an elastic sphere on a half-space. The Hertzian theory of impact is used for the normal components of force and velocity, and it is assumed that the contact area comprises sticking and slipping regions, in the latter of which the coefficient of friction is constant.

Melt Production in Oblique Impacts
Icarus, 2000Abstract Hydrocode modeling is a fundamental tool for the study of melt production in planetary impact events. Until recently, however, numerical modeling of impacts for melt production studies has been limited to vertical impacts. We present the first results of the investigation of melt production in oblique impacts.

Oblique incidence hypervelocity impacts on rock
Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2003The behaviour of granite rock under normal incidence hypervelocity impact in the laboratory has been studied using impacts of 2-mm diameter stainless-steel spheres at between 1 and 6 km s(-1). It was found that, at normal incidence, there is a strong dependence of crater size with impact speed (v). Crater mass was found to depend on v((2.3+/-0.4)), i.e.

Analysis of oblique hypervelocity impact phenomena
Advanced Marine Systems Conference, 1988This paper describes the results of an experimental investigation of phenomena associated with the oblique hypervelocity impact of spherical projectiles on multisheet aluminum structures. A model that can be employed in the design of meteoroid and space debris protection systems for space structures is developed.

Momentum transfer from oblique impacts
Introduction:Earth is continuously impacted by space debris and small asteroids, and, while large asteroid impacts are very rare, they have the potential to cause severe damage. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) aims to be the first mission to test a controlled deflection of a Near-Earth binary asteroid [1, 2], by impacting the smaller ...Sabina D. Oblique impact testing of bicycle helmets
International Journal of Impact Engineering, 2008Accident analysis showsthat the majority of bicycle helmet impacts are oblique to a surface, with the most common impact sites at the front and sides of the head. Hodgson showed that high frictional forces could occur when no-shell bicycle helmets made oblique impacts on rough concrete surfaces, while McIntosh et al.

Long rod penetration in oblique impact
AIP Conference Proceedings, 1996The oblique impact and penetration of long rods is investigated both experimentally and numerically. In the experiments a long copper rod impacted obliquely an aluminum plate at a velocity of 850 m/sec. We have chosen ductile materials like aluminum and copper to ensure that the results are not sensitive to the failure model used in the calculations ...
