Understanding Oblique Impacts from Experiments, Observations, and Modeling
Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences, 2000Natural impacts in which the projectile strikes the target vertically are virtually nonexistent. Nevertheless, our inherent drive to simplify nature often causes us to suppose most impacts are nearly vertical. Recent theoretical, observational, and experimental work is improving this situation, but even with the current wealth of studies on impact ...

Chest Deflections and Injuries in Oblique Lateral Impacts
Traffic Injury Prevention, 2008A majority of laboratory-driven side-impact injury assessments are conducted using postmortem human subjects (PMHS) under the pure lateral mode. Because real-world injuries occur under pure and oblique modes, this study was designed to determine chest deflections and injuries using PMHS under the latter mode.

The Impact of L’Etranger: Oblique Reflections on an Oblique Novel
1992I came to L’Etranger via L’Exil et le royaume (Exile and the Kingdom), or to be more exact, The Renegade’, one of the stories that figured in the book. It had been published in 1957, the year Camus won the Nobel Prize. I was taken in by this dark parable on suffering and power and the fascination that power holds for its victims.

Do oblique impacts produce Martian meteorites?
Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1983Geochronological and geochemical characteristics of several achondritic meteorites match those expected of Martian rocks. Several authors have suggested that these meteorites might have originated on Mars, but no satisfactory explanation has been given of how they may have been ejected from the Martian surface.

Oblique impact of a steel ball
Powder Technology, 2019Abstract Experimental results are presented concerning the impact of a 20 mm steel ball incident obliquely on a smooth granite surface. The angle of incidence and the spin of the ball were varied to examine the effects on the rebound velocity and spin.

Prolonged global catastrophes from oblique impacts
1990Most impacts occur obliquely rather than vertically as typically modeled. Laboratory experiments permit documenting the effects of impact angle on energy partitioning and related phenomena. Three results have particular significance for understanding the possible global atmospheric and biospheric response to a major impact. First, at low impact angles (

Intracranial response in helmet oblique impacts
2011The purpose of this work was to investigate the influence of the presence of the body in helmet oblique impacts on the tissue level response of the human head. The kinematic field of the head obtained from full-body and detached-head oblique impacts were used to drive a validated Finite Element model of the human head and evaluate predictors of the ...

Shock Pressure in Oblique Impact—A Theoretical Analysis
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1974The variation of shock pressure with the angle between the colliding surfaces in an oblique impact between two plane plates is analyzed theoretically. The analysis is carried out for small impact angles and the plate materials are assumed to behave like fluids (Case 1) and linear elastic media (Case 2).

Oblique impacts of non-rotating spheres
2014The paper deals with an experimental investigation of impacts of non-rotating spherical particles with a flat surface. By means of the PIV method velocity fields around falling spheres were analyzed. It is shown that the wake formed behind the particle which obliquely impacts is asymmetrical and after the impact the wake continues its motion to the ...
