Debris cloud distributions at oblique impacts
International Journal of Impact Engineering, 2008Abstract The purpose of this study is to obtain mass, spray angle and velocity distributions of fragments in debris cloud generated by oblique impacts on an aluminum alloy plate. Hypervelocity impact tests were performed with a two-stage light gas gun at Kyushu Institute of Technology. The impact angles were changed to 0°, 15°, 30°, 45° and 60°.

The oblique impact of elastic spheres
Wear, 1976Abstract A solution is developed for the oblique impact of an elastic sphere on a half-space. The Hertzian theory of impact is used for the normal components of force and velocity, and it is assumed that the contact area comprises sticking and slipping regions, in the latter of which the coefficient of friction is constant.

Melt Production in Oblique Impacts
Icarus, 2000Abstract Hydrocode modeling is a fundamental tool for the study of melt production in planetary impact events. Until recently, however, numerical modeling of impacts for melt production studies has been limited to vertical impacts. We present the first results of the investigation of melt production in oblique impacts.

Oblique incidence hypervelocity impacts on rock
Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2003The behaviour of granite rock under normal incidence hypervelocity impact in the laboratory has been studied using impacts of 2-mm diameter stainless-steel spheres at between 1 and 6 km s(-1). It was found that, at normal incidence, there is a strong dependence of crater size with impact speed (v). Crater mass was found to depend on v((2.3+/-0.4)), i.e.

Analysis of oblique hypervelocity impact phenomena
Advanced Marine Systems Conference, 1988This paper describes the results of an experimental investigation of phenomena associated with the oblique hypervelocity impact of spherical projectiles on multisheet aluminum structures. A model that can be employed in the design of meteoroid and space debris protection systems for space structures is developed.

Oblique impact testing of bicycle helmets
International Journal of Impact Engineering, 2008Accident analysis showsthat the majority of bicycle helmet impacts are oblique to a surface, with the most common impact sites at the front and sides of the head. Hodgson showed that high frictional forces could occur when no-shell bicycle helmets made oblique impacts on rough concrete surfaces, while McIntosh et al.

Long rod penetration in oblique impact
AIP Conference Proceedings, 1996The oblique impact and penetration of long rods is investigated both experimentally and numerically. In the experiments a long copper rod impacted obliquely an aluminum plate at a velocity of 850 m/sec. We have chosen ductile materials like aluminum and copper to ensure that the results are not sensitive to the failure model used in the calculations ...

Understanding Oblique Impacts from Experiments, Observations, and Modeling
Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences, 2000Natural impacts in which the projectile strikes the target vertically are virtually nonexistent. Nevertheless, our inherent drive to simplify nature often causes us to suppose most impacts are nearly vertical. Recent theoretical, observational, and experimental work is improving this situation, but even with the current wealth of studies on impact ...

Chest Deflections and Injuries in Oblique Lateral Impacts
Traffic Injury Prevention, 2008A majority of laboratory-driven side-impact injury assessments are conducted using postmortem human subjects (PMHS) under the pure lateral mode. Because real-world injuries occur under pure and oblique modes, this study was designed to determine chest deflections and injuries using PMHS under the latter mode.

The Impact of L’Etranger: Oblique Reflections on an Oblique Novel
1992I came to L’Etranger via L’Exil et le royaume (Exile and the Kingdom), or to be more exact, The Renegade’, one of the stories that figured in the book. It had been published in 1957, the year Camus won the Nobel Prize. I was taken in by this dark parable on suffering and power and the fascination that power holds for its victims.
