Observing Organizational Inequality Regimes

2016
Abstract After multiple decades stumbling in the status attainment wilderness, the sociological study of inequality is now cultivating a new garden: the workplace generation of inequalities. While our theories have long focused on contextually embedded social relations – often in production – as generating inequality, our methods have

Berry–Esseen inequalities for discretely observed diffusions

Monte Carlo Methods and Applications, 2009
Summary: For stationary ergodic diffusions satisfying nonlinear homogeneous Itô stochastic differential equations, the paper compares the bounds on the rates of convergence to normality (Berry-Esseen type) of two approximate maximum likelihood estimators of the drift parameter based on the Itô and the Fisk-Stratonovich approximations of the continuous ...

Applications of Observability Inequalities

2019
This article presents two observability inequalities for the heat equation over Ω × (0, T). In the first one, the observation is from a subset of positive measure in Ω × (0, T), while in the second, the observation is from a subset of positive surface measure on ∂Ω × (0, T).

Observations on certain inequality conditions in plasticity

International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, 1966
Abstract In this paper it is shown that the thermodynamic reference stress soKL which is associated with the state of plastic strain must always be within or on the yield surface. A restriction is therefore imposed on the functions representing the yield surface, the free energy, and strain hardening.

On Xiang's Observations Concerning the Cauchy–Schwarz Inequality

The American Mathematical Monthly, 2015
We give a simple proof of an improved version of the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality for vectors and for functions, first observed by Xiang. Also we improve an inequality of Minkowski.

A false inequality which is true for a ``concrete observer''

1990
The authors discuss the problem of estimating the total absolute curvature of a simply closed curve by some function depending on its geometric degree only. Such an estimate is not existent in general because the total absolute curvature can be raised by adding small ``nonconvex'' parts to convex pieces without affecting the geometric degree.

Systems with Persistent Memory: The Observation Inequality

2014
The goal of this chapter is to present a different circle of ideas used in the study of systems with persistent memory. For this, we give a proof of controllability which relays on the direct and inverse inequalities of the wave equation. The key properties we shall encounter are the extension of the hidden regularity to systems with memory, a test for
