Observability properties of the homogeneous wave equation on a closed manifold [PDF]

open access: yesCommunications in Partial Differential Equations, 2016
We consider the wave equation on a closed Riemannian manifold. We observe the restriction of the solutions to a measurable subset ω along a time interval with T> 0.

‘A completely different space’: Teachers' perspectives on disadvantage, access to nature and outdoor learning

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract This study examined teachers' perspectives on how children benefit from time in nature, how disadvantage shapes access and the role of schools in facilitating such access. Drawing on interviews conducted in 2022 with 25 UK primary school teachers who participated in Generation Wild, a nature connection programme for schools in economically ...

Null controllability of a model in population dynamics

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2014
In this article, we study the null controllability of a linear model with degenerate diffusion in population dynamics. We develop first a Carleman type inequality for the adjoint system of an intermediate model, and then an observability inequality.

On Weak Observability for Evolution Systems with Skew-Adjoint Generators [PDF]

open access: yesSIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, 2018
In the paper we consider the linear inverse problem that consists in recovering the initial state in a first order evolution equation generated by a skew-adjoint operator.

‘It's all very well having a diverse curriculum, but if there is no curriculum, it can be as diverse as you like’: Precarity and decolonising in the neoliberal UK higher education system

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Drawing upon interview research across two academic departments as part of the early stages of a ‘decolonise the curriculum’ initiative at a Southern UK university, this study highlights a growing gulf between policy and practice in efforts to address systemic racial inequalities in UK universities. A reliance upon precarious labour, a culture

Reachability of a second-order integro-differential equation on Riemannian manifold for a viscoelasticity model

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2019
We study a reachability problem for a second-order integro-differential equation on a finite-dimensional Riemannian manifold, which is a model equation for viscoelasiticity.

Observable set, observability, interpolation inequality and spectral inequality for the heat equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$

open access: yes, 2017
This paper studies connections among observable sets, the observability inequality, the H lder-type interpolation inequality and the spectral inequality for the heat equation in $\mathbb R^n$. We present a characteristic of observable sets for the heat equation.

Contrasting roles of school and public libraries in lower primary pupils' reading

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Libraries represent an important institutional component of children's reading socialisation, yet their role is often treated as uniform despite substantial differences between school and public libraries. This study examines how visits to school and public libraries relate to pupils' reading attitudes, practices and self‐assessed reading ...

Taxation, redistribution, and observability in social dilemmas

open access: yesJournal of Public Economic Theory, 2019
In the presence of social dilemmas, cooperation is more difficult to achieve when populations are heterogeneous because of conflicting interests within groups.

Publicly funded private schools and academic achievement: A comparative analysis of PISA data in European countries

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper analyses differences in academic achievement associated with attendance at publicly funded private schools and public schools across 11 European countries. Using eight waves of PISA data (2000–2022), we apply OLS, IPW and IPWRA estimators to account for observed heterogeneity and mitigate selection bias.
