Charles Michie Smith - founder of the Kodaikanal (Solar Physics) Observatory and beginnings of physical astronomy in India [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Science, 2014, vol.106, no.3,447 - 467, 2014
It has been about 115 years since the establishment of Kodaikanal Observatory as an extension of the original Madras Observatory, which has evolved into the present Indian Institute of Astrophysics at Bangalore. It is also the first mountain observatory in India.

Observatory/data centre partnerships and the VO-centric archive: The JCMT Science Archive experience

open access: yes, 2014
We present, as a case study, a description of the partnership between an observatory (JCMT) and a data centre (CADC) that led to the development of the JCMT Science Archive (JSA).

Repeating Low Frequency Icequakes in the Mont‐Blanc Massif Triggered by Snowfalls

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 127, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Deformation mechanisms of glaciers are highly sensitive to basal temperature; the motion of temperate glaciers is dominated by basal slip while cold‐based glaciers deform mainly by internal creep. While basal slip is usually aseismic, unstable slip sometimes occurs and can be detected by seismometers.

Influence of Multiband Technique on Temporal Diffusion Spectroscopy and Its Diagnostic Value in Breast Tumors

open access: yesJournal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, EarlyView.
Background Temporal diffusion spectroscopy (TDS) is a noninvasive diffusion imaging technique used to characterizing cellular microstructures. The influence of multiband (MB) on TDS, particularly in breast tumor imaging remain unknown. Purpose To investigate the influence of MB on TDS in terms of scanning time, image quality, and quantitative ...

A Proper Use of the Adjacent Land‐Based Observatory Magnetic Field Data to Account for the Geomagnetic Disturbances During Offshore Directional Drilling

open access: yesSpace Weather, Volume 20, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Directional drilling in the oil fields relies particularly on the “on‐fly” measurements of the natural magnetic field (measurements while drilling; MWD); the MWD are eventually used to construct the well path. These measurements are the superposition of the signals from the internal, core and crustal, and external, ionospheric and ...

The Sky Polarization Observatory

open access: yesNew Astronomy, 2004
SPOrt is an ASI-funded experiment specifically designed to measure the sky polarization at 22, 32 and 90 GHz, which was selected in 1997 by ESA to be flown on the International Space Station. Starting in 2006 and for at least 18 months, it will be taking direct and simultaneous measurements of the Stokes parameters Q and U at 660 sky pixels, with FWHM ...
