The role of thermal stratification on the co‐spectral properties of momentum transport above an Amazonian forest

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Using micrometeorological measurements in Brazil at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory, the scalewise impact of thermal stratification on turbulent momentum fluxes is explored in the roughness sublayer and the atmospheric surface layer. A scalewise co‐spectral budget model developed here revealed that the turbulent momentum co‐spectrum Fwu(kx)$$ {F}_{wu}

Evaluating meteorological reanalysis for identifying fair‐weather conditions in historical atmospheric electricity data

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Atmospheric electricity data require local weather information for identifying representative ‘fair weather’ values, which are needed for climate‐related studies. ERA5 meteorological reanalysis data are evaluated for this, by comparison with data from Lerwick observatory, Shetland, where a long series of twentieth‐century potential gradient ...

Reflective Solar Cooker [PDF]

open access: yes
Introduction: This reflective solar cooker uses the Sun’s energy to cook marshmallows. The target cooking area is the space where the light concentration is greatest. Never look directly at the Sun! It could damage your eyes. Don’t allow the cooker to

Dynamic Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution for Securing a Future Global Quantum Network

open access: yesAdvanced Quantum Technologies, EarlyView.
The article explores securing a dynamic global quantum network using continuous variable QKD, proposing a unified three‐layer network architecture for integrating existing QKD networks. It evaluates secret key rates across various channels and introduces the link capacity as a metric for determining the optimum path for secret key distribution in a ...

Equatorial Sundial [PDF]

open access: yes
Introduction: One of astronomy’s first tools to measure the flow of time, a sundial is simply a stick that casts a shadow on a face marked with units of time. As Earth spins, the shadow sweeps across the face.
