Nature of the Physical Observer
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2010The nature of the observer has long plagued physical science. Here we review the current status of cognitive science in the context of a cosmology of mind in an Anthropic Multiverse. The concept of an elan vital or life force has long been considered the elementary action principle driving the evolution of living‐systems by theologically minded ...

The quantum physics of observers
Journal of Optics B: Quantum and Semiclassical Optics, 2002The observer is herein studied as an aspect of laboratory physics. It is generally accepted that our status as observers is mediated by our material aspects: our body and brain. But, observers are typically equated with classical coordinate systems. An alternative, modelling the observer as a quantum entity, is considered.

Essential structure in physical observation
Kybernetes, 2004At the heart of any process of observation there are certain basic things which must happen. These might be analysed in abstract terms, or then again in terms of the quantum physical irreducibles. The paper links between these concerns. It starts by exploring the macroscopic processes which are essential to observation and from there it develops the ...

Is time dilation physically observable?
Foundations of Physics, 1974The circular arc swept out by the angular displacement of a clock indicator (or its equivalent representation) measuring time is shown to be a Lorentz invariant, representing “universal” time. The concepts of time dilation and transverse Doppler effect are accordingly not physically observable.

Physical examination. Frequently observed errors.
JAMA, 1976A method allowing for direct observation of intern and resident physicians while interviewing and examining patients has been in use on our medical wards for the last five years. A large number of errors in the performance of the medical examination by young physicians were noted and a classification of these errors into those of technique, omission ...

Coronal physics from eclipse observations
Advances in Space Research, 1994Abstract Solar total eclipses are rare occasions offering the opportunity to make a snapshot of the solar corona. Thanks to the availability of a large radiative flux in the optical region, sophisticated methods can be used from the ground to analyse all parts of the highly structured white-light corona.
