Routine episiotomy in primiparas has become an accepted procedure; use of low forceps will spare the baby considerable trauma and prevent much maternal discomfort. The vertex posterior presentation is a common indication for use of obstetric forceps. Another indication is breech presentation. Midforceps delivery has a limited place in obstetrics.
