A comparison of occipital and temporal lobe epilepsies
PURPOSE: Differentiating between occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is often challenging. This retrospective case-control study compares OLE to TLE and explores markers that suggest the diagnosis of OLE.

Brain Mapping of Epileptic Activity in a Case of Idiopathic Occipital Lobe Epilepsy (Panayiotopoulos Syndrome) [PDF]
The Panayiotopoulos type of occipital lobe epilepsy has generated great interest, but the particular brain areas involved in the peculiar seizure manifestations have not been established.

Abstract This chapter describes the isotope injection cases in the occipital lobe of five rhesus monkeys. It analyzes the resulting association, striatal, commissural, and subcortical fiber trajectories, as well as the cortical and subcortical terminations. The injections were in the medial preoccipital gyrus involving the medial part of

Seven patients, each with a different pattern of homonymous visual loss caused by ischemic infarction of the occipital lobe, were studied with computed tomography. The retinotopic representation of the visual field on the occipital lobes, as determined by these studies, fully confirms those deduced by previous investigators.

Summary: Eleven hours and 6 days, respectively, after childbirth 2 women exhibited hypertension and paroxysmal visual disturbances followed by tonic‐clonic seizures and no other preeclamptic signs. Both developed partial epilepsy with occipital lobe seizures with no other neurologic defects.

Idiopathic Photosensitive Occipital Lobe Epilepsy
Epilepsia, 1995Summary: We studied 10 neurologically normal patients (8 females, 2 males) aged 8–30 years (mean 17 years) who had recurrent episodes of visually induced occipital seizures. Television and computer screens were the main triggers. Seizure onset occurred between the ages of 5 and 17 years (mean 11 years).

Due to the primarily sensory roles of the parietal and occipital lobes they have not received anywhere near the investigative focus of the more cognitive- and limbic-involved regions. The research that has been published has been mostly on structural and functional imaging with some investigation of metabolic changes.
