The workplace can be responsible for approximately one in 10 cases of adult-onset asthma. Two types of occupational asthma (OA) are distinguished by whether they arise after a latency period that is necessary for acquiring sensitization or as a result of acute exposure to irritant materials (irritant-induced asthma).

Population-based studies suggest that one in 10 cases of new, recurrent, or deteriorating asthma in adulthood is related to the workplace environment. Nonspecific, irritant exposures at work can upset symptom control in pre-existing disease (work-exacerbated asthma); where disease arises de novo from the workplace (occupational asthma) it generally has

Abstract Substantial epidemiologic and clinical evidence indicates that agents inhaled at work can induce asthma. In industrialized countries, occupational factors have been implicated in 9 to 15% of all cases of adult asthma. Work-related asthma includes (1) immunologic occupational asthma (OA), characterized by a latency period ...

Occupational asthma is an important occupational respiratory disorder, both in terms of morbidity, disability and in the total number of cases. The two types of occupational asthma are classified on the basis of their temporal relationship to onset. Occupational asthma with latency reflects allergic occupational asthma and is a condition characterized ...

Journal of Asthma, 2002
Occupational asthma is a common yet all too frequently unnoticed form of adult asthma. Many agents can trigger disease by a variety of mechanisms, some of which are unknown. Awareness of high-risk occupations and knowledge that adults with persistent asthma may have an occupational trigger are vital in early identification and treatment of this ...

Agents Causing Occupational Asthma
The workplace is a significant contributor to the burden of asthma. Although the majority of cases probably represent what is labeled work-exacerbated asthma, in a significant number of subjects, asthma is actually caused by 1 or more agents present in ...

The scientific literature on occupational asthma is steadily increasing and no longer only describes case reports with prevalence figures and limited physiopathologic and immunologic data. Prospective cohort studies are currently carried out with relevant incidence figures and risk factors. Genetic susceptibility is explored.

Occupational asthma is recognized as the most common form of occupational lung disease. Over 200 causative substances have been described. Major cases of occupational asthma are discussed along with valuable diagnostic approaches. Early diagnosis and removal of the patient from workplace exposure to the causative substance can prevent progression to ...
