The epidemiology of occupational burns injuries in a well-defined population is analysed. Although a total of 371 persons sustained an injury, only a few were inpatients and just one required anti-shock treatment. The mean burn surface area was 0.66 per cent and 14 patients had full thickness burn injuries. There were no deaths.

Occupational Injuries in Ghana

Household interviews were used to survey 21,105 persons living in 431 urban and rural sites in Ghana, to determine the nature and extent of their occupational injuries. Annual occupational injury rates were 11.5 injuries/1000 persons in the urban areas and 44.9/1000 in the rural areas.

As the first step in evaluation of the magnitude of the occupational injuries (OIs) in our community, we focused on hospital records of more than 8400 hospitalized trauma patients in six large university hospitals during 13 months of data gathering process. Fourteen percent of 8426 trauma patients had OIs (1180 cases) and 95% of them were male.
