Governing factors of the record-breaking marine heatwave over the mid-latitude western North Pacific in the summer of 2021

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
During July of 2021, the sea surface temperature of the mid-latitude western North Pacific had increased by five degrees over 10 days. This high temperature was maintained for approximately a month before it disappeared rapidly in approximately five days.

Coastal Observation Using a Vertical Profiling System at the Southern Coast of Korea

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
At a coastal station near the southern coast of Korea, the vertical profiles of temperature salinity dissolved oxygen and velocity were obtained using a vertical profiler, Aqualog, every summer from 2016 to 2020.

Effects of mesoscale eddies on intraseasonal variability of intermediate water east of Taiwan

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
The intraseasonal variability of the intermediate water (IW) and its characteristics east of Taiwan are studied utilizing 17 months of long-term, continuous and synchronous measurements of temperature, salinity and current from mooring sites deployed at ...

Observed three dimensional distributions of enhanced turbulence near the Luzon Strait

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Ocean turbulence can impact the transfer of heat, nutrients, momentum and sea level rise, which are crucially important to climate systems. The Luzon Strait, one of the mixing hotspots, is important for water exchange between the northeastern South China

Atypical seasonal variability of the Kuroshio Current affected by intraseasonal signals at its origin based on direct mooring observations

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
The spatial distribution and temporal variability of the Kuroshio Current (KC) was investigated with three moorings deployed at 122.7° E, 123° E, and 123.3° E along 18° N from January 2018 to the spring of 2020.

Ocean mixing induced by three-dimensional structure of equatorial mode tropical instability waves in the Pacific Ocean

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Observations have revealed that tropical instability waves (TIWs) play an important role in the ocean mixing of the equatorial thermocline. However, most studies have not distinguished the individual effects from the TIWs’ two modes, and most of them ...

Typhoon storm surge in the southeast Chinese mainland modulated by ENSO

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
In the past decade (2010–2019), the annual maximum typhoon storm surge (AMTSS) accounted for 46.6% of the total direct economic loss caused by marine disasters in Chinese mainland, but its prediction in advance is challenging.

Weak Mesoscale Variability in the Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST)-AVHRR-Only Version 2 Data before 2007

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2022
Mesoscale sea surface temperature (SST) variability triggers mesoscale air–sea interactions and is linked to ocean subsurface mesoscale dynamics. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) daily Optimum Interpolation SST (OISST) products,

Water sources of the Lombok, Ombai and Timor outflows of the Indonesian throughflow

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
The Lombok Strait (LS), Ombai Strait (OS), and Timor Passage (TP) are three major outlets of the Indonesian Throughflow to the Indian Ocean. Here, sources and pathways of the LS, OS, and TP outflows are explored by a Lagrangian particle tracking analysis
