OCEAN CIRCULATION | Thermohaline Circulation

2003
The circulation of the ocean is usually divided into two parts, a wind-driven circulation that dominates in the upper few hundred meters, and a density-driven circulation that dominates below. The latter is called the ‘thermohaline’ circulation because of the role of heating, cooling, freshening, and salinification in producing regional density ...

Ocean circulation

Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A. Mathematical and Physical Sciences, 1962
Although the main features of the surface circulation have been known for hundreds of years, and the water masses below the surface were mapped out by the great systematic surveys made in the period between the two world wars, the amplitude of the deep circulation is still uncertain, and the detail of the subsurface water movements is still in the main

Modeling Equatorial Ocean Circulation

Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics, 1985

Deep-ocean circulation

1985
Up to now we have discussed ocean currents only in the surface layer, i.e. above the main or permanent thermocline. This layer constitutes approximately 10% of the volume of the World Ocean. It was amply demonstrated that the major current systems in the upper strata are generated by atmospheric forces.

Ocean circulation

2000
"How inappropriate," wrote Arthur C. Clarke, "to call this planet Earth when clearly it's Ocean. " It's hard to argue with that. Viewed from space, our planet looks predominantly blue because the oceans cover 71 per cent of the surface. We wouldn't be here if it were otherwise.
