Water mass characteristics and hydrodynamics at an inshore versus an offshore mid-Norwegian cold-water coral reef habitat

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
IntroductionCold-water coral reefs form complex benthic habitats, supporting thousands of species. The broadscale environmental tolerances of reef-forming species such as Lophelia pertusa are well studied, but small-scale differences between different ...

Observation of Near-Inertial Oscillations Induced by Energy Transformation during Typhoons

open access: yesEnergies, 2018
Three typhoon events were selected to examine the impact of energy transformation on near-inertial oscillations (NIOs) using observations from a subsurface mooring, which was deployed at 125° E and 18° N on 26 September 2014 and recovered on 11 ...

Investigating the role that the Southern Ocean biological pump plays in determining global ocean oxygen concentrations and deoxygenation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Global ocean circulation connects marine biogeochemical cycles through the long-range transport of nutrients and oxygen with the Southern Ocean (SO) acting as a water mass crossroads. The biological pump in the SO has been shown to play an important role

Geothermal Heating and its Influence on the Meridional Overturning Circulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The effect of geothermal heating on the meridional overturning circulation is examined using an idealized, coarse-resolution ocean general circulation model.

Influence of Sea-Ice Anomalies on Antarctic Precipitation Using Source Attribution in the Community Earth System Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
We conduct sensitivity experiments using a general circulation model that has an explicit water source tagging capability forced by prescribed composites of pre-industrial sea-ice concentrations (SICs) and corresponding sea surface temperatures (SSTs) to

Phase‐Resolved Attribution of Tropical Cyclone Cold Wakes From an Interpretable Data‐Driven Model

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Machine Learning and Computation
Tropical cyclones (TCs) generate pronounced sea surface cooling through multiscale air‐sea interactions, yet predicting its full evolution and identifying the governing mechanisms remain challenging. Here we develop TC‐Net, an interpretable deep learning

Incorporation of Novel Synthetic Glycolipids in Liposomal Nanoparticles Affects Opsonization and In Vivo Clearance

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
We prepared five glycosylated liposomal nanoparticles (G‐LNPs) to investigate the role of glycosylation and protein corona in modulating the in vivo behavior of G‐LNPs. We show that IgG and complement C3 adsorption enhanced liposomal nanoparticle clearance, with IgG promoting subsequent C3 binding.

Suppressed Changes of the Makassar Strait Throughflow During the 2020–2023 “Triple‐Dip” La Niña by Indian Ocean Winds

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
As a crucial component of global ocean circulation, the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is modulated by the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation. While multi‐year La Niña events often greatly enhance the volume transport of the ITF, the 2020–2023 La Niña caused ...

Distribution and Environmental Impact of Expanded Polystyrene Buoys from Korean Aquaculture Farms

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) buoys, commonly employed in South Korean aquaculture farms, are prone to fragmentation, generating substantial marine debris. The trajectories of EPS buoys dislocated from aquaculture farms were investigated using a Lagrangian ...

Surface Current in “Hotspot” Serves as a New and Effective Precursor for El Niño Prediction

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The El Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the most prominent sources of inter-annual climate variability. Related to the seasonal phase-locking, ENSO’s prediction across the low-persistence barrier in the boreal spring remains a challenge.
